SOUNDS LIKE AHEAT SHIELD FELL OUT. CHECK YOUR LOCAL PICKNPULL FOR A REPLACEMENT

I would be more inclined to think it was a bad cat.

I noticed the same on my S10 Blazer, and took it in to the shop that had installed the cat. converter about 5 years ago. They told me that the heat was from the cat. converter actually burning off excess fuel. They put a hole in the cat. converter with a cutting torch to inspect it, and it was glowing red inside - the honeycomb was not clogged up ata ll - but it was sure burning off some fuel (and gave the rotten-egg smell) - they told me that's usually an indication that the cat. converter is working very well, and is doing it's job. The bat part, now, though - is to find out why the engine is dumping fuel into the mixture to make excess enough to have to make use of the catalytic converter.
G'Luck!
