Engine stalls after replacement

I had to replace the 3.3 engine in my 1996 intrepid. when I put it in gear the engine trys to die and the car will not move. It feels like the trany inguages in forward and reverse, then seems to get bound up in reverse. Could the tourqe converter not lined up right have anything to do with this? Any help would be nice.
