Question on masking tape...

I use regular masking tape (from WalMart) and it is somewhat hard to cut around the window frames or any place i might want to detail. Is there anyother replacement I can find in the states or should I just buy Tamiya masking tape. I have searched in alot of hobby stores around my area and they dont carry any Tamiya tape.

Tamiya masking tape is the only one to use - accept no substitute!!! Buy some and you will see why.

Allow me to offer an alternative..

Try 3M automotive masking tape... the detail masking tape is 2nd to none.. the 1/8" wide stuff will allow you to mask off the diameter of a nickel with one piece without wrinkles.. it's flexable, and it absolutely rocks.

Pick it up at an automotive paint store.

Since i use almost only automotive laquers, i'm always in those stores anyhow :)

Dont use tape from noname cheap price... Use Tamiya or Humbrol Liquid Mask...

Call me crazy, I just have to ask, wouldn't masking tape that's good enough for car paintjobs be good enough for models?

Crazy Sob;) there is a difference in masking tape! A big difference. The automotive stuff is used specifically for "automotive " paints. They have a stronger bond compared to all model paints. I've had bad things happen-even with proper sanding/washing of plastics, priming with appropriate primers, and using MODEL paints (using auto grade primer and paints requires a different approach to prep methods, but results in a paint bond like real cars). The adhesives in automotive grade masking tape are much too strong and will sometimes leave very deep etchings in model paints when left on too long.-Think of all that hard work to get that nice smooth paint job you've acquired:( .

Most of us use the Tamiya stuff for a reason. I've painted with every type paint imaginable (except for house paints for the smart asses) :D
Tamiya tape has the best edge sealing properties in their adhesives and this stuff really bends like to other! Try tearing the stuff and it seems as though its got a type of plastic or vinyl blending in addition to the paper.
Tamiya's stuff does not harm any type of model paint if paint is dried properly. Sorry for the long post.

You can try and mail order somewhere. The tape comes in 3 sizes that I've noticed and costs about 5-9 dollars. There are some with dispensers and there are refill packages.

Again I'm humbled. :D In the relentless pursuit of finding sh@t that I need I attempt every shortcut imaginable. Although when you take to many shortcuts its like not doing anything at all, I guess. Anyway I see your point about automitive paints getting baked on and all... Hmmm... I just though *maybe*... Anyway, like I said I've got my head up on some Tamiya tape, and it's definately coming in my next order.

Oh, and don't worry about the long posts, as long as I'm learning it's all good.
