Front wheel noise

Today while driving with the windows down, I noticed a strange and repititious noise coming from (I think) the front driver's side wheel/tire. The noise makes me think of what a tire might sound like if an 8-10" section of it were covered in aluminum foil - it crunches for a short time and at a consistent interval.

I have looked over the tire and it seems to be fine.

It's a '99 GLS.

Any ideas?

I have a similar sound, but I get it only when the wheel is turned a quarter turn or more in either direction. When it's going left, the sound comes from the right front wheel - when turning right, it's from the left. It seems to happen once every tire rotation, so as speed increases, so does the sound. I know it's not the tires, as it did it with my old ones, too. It could be the wheels, as after I park ,the chrome makes the same noise, but only a few times a minute.

We discovered what the noise is. It's the chrome plating on the inside of the wheels that is sluffing off. Nothing to worry about and it should stop making the noise on its own or if I go under and pull the chunks off myself.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking it is on mine too. But, I don't know if the chrome is just peeling, or if it's peeling due to stuctural problems with the wheel.

when you clean the chrome wheels only use soap and water or the special mix from GM. That wheel cleaner stuff will make the chrome peel off.
