AC problems 99 Ranger 3.0

I have a 1999 Ranger 3.0 4wd. The air conditioner works but does not put out very cold air, mildly cool. I have recharged with coolent but the compressor seems to cycle on and off every 5 or so seconds. My Windstar with the same engine does not do this quick cycling. Any ideas?

I have charged up to the max level before danger.

you might need to take it and have it evacuated first. then fully charged. also, check condensor for dirt stuck in the fins

You may have over-charged it. When you say "charged up to the max level before danger", what pressure was that at?
