Yamaha's Virago

This is my latest project from the pile I have to do, the Yamaha Virago.

I decided not to follow the colours suggested by Tamiya and also strip off all the chromed parts and paint them with Alclad's chrome (first time I used this paint).

And here's what I have done so far:

Found that the chrome paint works well until it started to clog my airbrush resulting in less air coming through and matt finish on the engine parts. But rather than start again I have kept them as they are and does not look to bad.

The colour I choose for the frame, fuel tank and battery covers was clear blue over Tamiya's X11 chrome which has given a really nice blue:

And this is how far I have got so far, engine nearly complete and fitted to frame as well as the rear end nearly completed as well, the second lot of chrome came out a little better, but I think I will have to clean out the airbrush between every coat to get the desired affect:

Also decided to smooth of the rear mud guard and lose the number plate attachment:

Thats all for now.:)

I think the engine looks great, as a matter of fact. Just keep it that way. Frame and cowling parts looks really nice as well!

Hey!

really nice job, this is my next project too - I have the one with the rider though. I have not built a bike for many a year and Im really looking forward to getting started on it and I too will be doing a different colour sheme - the finish you have achieved with the blue looks stunning! I like your finish on the engine too - the Tamiya chrome is far too bright I think.

Are you adding any extra details or cabling etc? I dont think I have ever seen grade up kits for this model - do you or anyone else know of any?

excellent work mate, looking forward to more updates

Thanks for all the comments:grinyes:

And Sean thanks for your comments and to answer your questions, I will be building this one straight out of the box unless anybody can find me some come up pictures of the real bike. And I have got to agree with you I do not believe you can get a detail up grade kit for this bike unless anyone knows otherwise.

And here's the latest pictures, got the exhaust finish, some more parts added to the engine, as well the foot stands and rear light housing:

And after a month of waiting finally got hold of my 1/9 Tamiya Honda Magna from Hong Kong and can't wait to get stuck into it.

I quite like the built so far. I don't think you need to use any upgrade kit.

It's good that we see some different type of bike on the forum. Lately we see only sports bikes, but I believe it's due to poor representation of the cruiser or enduro styles in Tamiya's line. They have only another Yamaha XV1600 in their line of 1:20 kits.

Dan

its nice to see a "Crusier bike" built, seems like all you see here is Sport Bikes. looks awsome so far.

Thanks for all the comments and thanks again to Sean for the pictures.

The latest, just the steering and forks to complete but otherwise 98% complete.

Tried out some heat stain decal on the exhaust and I'm very impressed with how it looks although a couple of small creases to sort out:
