looking at getting myself a new GTO...

Hey guys,

Im looking at getting a GTO once I get back from my round the world trip (and no I'm not rich, I just saved up)

I've have previously owned a 92 TT GTO which was a lot of fun and the body styling turned a lot of heads. I dont have any cars at the moment as I sold them all to help finance my trip. A few months after getting back I will be looking at getting another GTO and my question is, WHICH ONE?

The options:

94 1st gen TT

96/97 2nd gen TT

a 96/97 TT MR.

or a 98/99 3rd gen

Now given that most of you are American on this forum I would assume you would all say MR straight up but there are a few reasons against it.

First off, the 2nd gen TT. Its nice, has the better engine, the main qusetion I want to know is that is the gearing different on the TT as opposed to the MR? I know on the 99 GTOs it is the same gearing but at what time did they change to be the same? During the 96 update along with the hoop spoiler??? The TTs can also get leather Interior which I think looks awesome. If the gearing is the same as the MR I would probably go for the TT.

The MR is obviously the quickest of the lot. but lacks a lot of the options. The loss of AWS, Active areo, active exhaust, EMS doesnt really bother me so much. The lack of leather interior does. The fabric inside looks shitty and decidedly unclassy. Im not too sure if the MR lost the power seats either which is another consideration. An MR would cost me about the same as a TT. But I would also get to say that I drive an MR edition....

the 94 first gen. It has a REALLY nice body shape and it has all of the 2nd gen engine goodies. That is DEFINATELY a bonus. Does anyone know if the 94s are 5spd or 6 speed? I saw one advertised and it said 6 speed but im not sure if I believe him. Also again with the gearing, assuming it is a 6 speed, would it have the quicker 6 speed gearing or the slower 6 speed gearing?

The 3rd gen 98/99s (yes 3rd gens started in mid late 98 in Japan) definately look much better than the 2nd gens. But because of this they cost a bit more than the 2rd gens :frown:

There is a nice 94 TT for sale at the moment for a really good price. I dont know if there is anything wrong with it but it is something I am considering. I could import a 96 onwards GTO from Japan no worries. The best possible conbination would be a 3rd 98 MR GTO. It would be cheaper than the 99, have the quick gearing and look awesome. The problem is the extra expense. Which is about $5,000 AUD.

Well go nuts in telling me what I should or shouldnt buy and for what reason? Im not really set on anything atm and im open to everyones opinions.

Im probably going to modify it to run at least a high 11 run too.:iceslolan

you could always get seat covers for the MR, and if I know you, you'll prolly ditch the AWS, and put a new exhaust on there anyways... I say go MR, and either re-do the interior, or just get seat covers for it...

The MR and 6 speed TT do in fact have the same gearing.

all first gens came out of the factory with a 5 speed

do they really have that many mr's over in your area? i have never seen one in my life and to my understanding they are rare enough to stay that way.

Right thats why I said 6 speeds are all teh same gearing. I didnt mention anything about gens.

The problem with the generations overseas is its different than here in the states. We already have 07 vehicles about to be roaming the streets. Overseas the 94 could still be a 1st gen to us. It depends on when the car is bought, titled, etc. Another thinkg some people dont know is overseas our 94-96 body style is what was used from 94-99 on GTOs and non US spec 3k's.

damnit....just when i though i had all the gen. differences and changes figured out

so stealthee, our (USA) 97, 98, and 99 front bumpers are not found overseas???

i think im gonna try and make a chart on all the changes throughout the years to all the different 3/s models, here and abroad.

No sir. There is a guy on 3si with a 2000 Euro 3k. It looks just like a 94-96 US spec 3k.

Not quite just like it. The passenger side "fin" in the bumper is removable, and there are side markers on the car.

The MR and 6 speed TT do in fact have the same gearing.

But do they have the same gearing throughout the whole production line even before the MR existed though?

all first gens came out of the factory with a 5 speed

Even the 94 "hybrid gen"??

the 94 model im reffering to is the 1st gen shell with the 2nd gen running gear. if it has FULL 2nd gen running gear then I would assume that the gearbox would have been changed too.

I didnt even know there was a change to the front end of the GTOs between the 2nd gens...

The interior is the only thing holding me back from getting the MR, its not just the seat but all the door trims as well.

Yah you got me there. Although I didnt realize the fin was removable.

As for the gearing the 5 speeds had one set of gearing and the 6 speeds were another. As long as its the 6 speed it should have the exact same gearing as the MR... unless someone swapped in US spec 6 speed gears.

I dont but my boss of whom I sold my 300zx to, does. He has just redone the whole interior in red and black and it looks pretty shmick... I think Im now leaning towards the MR, but the importing of it will still be a bitch.

The 2nd gens ill have to import from Japan, which will take probably over a year, where as a 1st gen I can just buy locally.

ugh...i dont know how much of a pain in the ass aussie laws are about importing vehicles...if you were in the US i would say its not worth the hassle lol. Good luck with that though man. MR will be sick. Waiting a year sucks though :banghead:

like blink said, if importing to Aus. is anything like the U.S. than I think what you should do is get a first gen, and change the front to look like that of a U.S. 1999'...

Hahahaha, Ive heard horror stories about importing to the US. Well i'm happy to sya that importing into Aust isnt NEARLY that bad. I basically have to wait fir a compliance workshop to get their accreditation for complying GTOs and then get them to comply it for me. However, only one shop in Aust is going for it and it wont be done for another 3 months. Then I can start the import process going, which will probably take another 3-4 months at least.... :frown:

Man, Yaggus arent you the same guy who bought a GTO TT at an auto auction last year and then sold it like 3 days later just so you could turn a quick buck?

^nice to see you back, and in his defense, he was going on a trip around the world and he sold his z32TT, celica all-trac, and his GTO in order to finance it... if out of all of those, he's going with the GTO (which I think is gonna' be the most expensive) I think he deserves some 3/s brownie points.

Yes that was me and yes I do plan on keeping this one a bit longer. :smokin:
And it was a good $2500 that I made on that last one too :grinyes:

If all goes to plan I should have an, whats looks to be, MR GTO running 11s in the near future and that i should be keeping for quite a while.
