This hobby has only really taken off for me in the past year, Its been a great experience and I think, Looking back at the kits I've built from the Sti subaru over 1 year ago to the mini cooper "s" mark 1 which I finished just a few days ago, I've learned alot from reading and experimenting.. Although altogether I have only sprayed 5-6 car shells with tamiya sprays,I do have a compressor and an airbrush but I Just dont have a clue about pressures and paint mixtures. So at the moment Im using Tamiya spray cans..

To the point..

I have a Renault megane Great Britagne and a Toyota Rav 4 which i am working on at the moment, both are two tone shells,Im really not sure about when to remove masking tapes and how long to leave the shell before applying a second colour..How do I go about achieving a nice clean line between colours..

I could probably mess around and find some satisfactory results for myself but I would really appreciate some advice from the experienced users on this forum..

When I built my Audi Quattro rally (2 colours yellow over white) I sprayed the whole car with the white first and left this to dry for a week. Then I masked out for the yellow sections using Tamiya masking tape. After spraying the yellow I left it for about 20 mins before carefully removing the masking tape. This method worked fine for me and none of the edges lifted on the yellow as the paint was still flexible after 20 mins drying but not too soft as to make rough edges.I was using Tamiya TS sprays for the white and yellow.Hope this helps,it's the way I did it but probably not the only way to do it.Experimenting is the key to success and see which method works best for you.Practice on an old model shell to perfect the technique before you commit it to your model.

You let the lighter base color dry completely before masking to spray the second color. Mask carefully, spray some clear over the masking edge so if there's any bleed it's clear. Then spray the second color, and remove the masking material before the color has dried. I usually only let the paint tack up briefly before carefully (because the paint is still soft) removing the masking. If you wait until dry the edge may be difficult and the tape may have done some etching into the base color.
