They were truly shot. I see you broke the elbow on the intake. Common problem when you work on these engines. I think you will be pleased when you get the gaskets replaced. Just don't forget to change the oil and filter before you start it up.

I'll vouch for you Troy considering we discussed removing the alternator and heat exchanger/tensioner to get the elbow off without breaking it.
Good job. Let us know how the new improved gaskets work out.

Nowheres near as bad as yours. Damage was noted around the coolant passage seals around cylinder 3 and 5. What brand coolant are you using? It sound like a complete cooling system flush is in order.
Since GM came out with these new gaskets I wonder if it was just a bad choice of gasket material composition or whether it was Dexcool damage. It takes a high amount of acidity, PH or conductivity to break down gaskets.
Speaking of conductivity within the cooling system. You can actually measure it with a multimeter setup in DC volts position. It will read in millivolts. Take black lead to battery ground. Remove radiator cap and insert tip of red lead into coolant. You will be surprised what reading shows up. I don't recall what the maximum allowable reading is off the top of my head.
BTW - ^^Engine cool and ignition to off.

I just had it flushed from Dex 10 months ago the dex was getting that brown gritty look to it. I went the good old green stuff. I wonder if any was seeping into the engine or getting into the combustion chamber. Electrolysis is a bad thing.
flowers what flowers I didn't see no flowers :uhoh:

My gaskets aren't nearly that bad. I've used Dexcool and never had a problem with it. When I drained yesterday the coolant was a nice pinkish orange with no rusty look. I had the radiator cleaned at a shop today and he said it was not in bad shape at all.
