Has one of us been maintaining this particular article?

To be honest, I have glanced through it before but that's about it. Wikipedia has never really caught on with me for some reason. :dunno:

I'll give it a thorough look soon and see if I can add or change anything important. Others here should do the same.

i am waiting for wikipedia to go web 2.0. it's pretty lame right now, although still very useful. first thing they need to do is change the font. next, add some css. long articles are very difficult to wade through right now.

The reason I asked is because whoever is maintaing it has been browsing/posting on F1 forums...it's not the stereotypical "lone idiot supercar fanboy" who's been maintaining it =)

It used to have some incorrect information, so I've added a lot of info on it (under the username NIRVANA2764).

Could anybody change the picture to a better one? I put the shot of #028 in there that Diablo Roadster took but somebody took it down and put up the shot of #007 without the headlight covers, which looks pretty awful.

I saw a few changes I wanted to make and would be happy to put up some better photographs. I'm not sure how many it will allow, but I am pretty certain I can find a winner.

I went to do it this weekend, but didn't have a login and didn't want to be anonymous. I'll try to figure it out tonight if I have some free time.

Their production break down isn't accurate. They didn't mention the prototypes except I guess for the GT because they said there are 3 GTs. All they said was "the rest were GTR models" and that is wrong if you tally the rest (35 GTRs by their count). No mention of a spare tub which should be included I guess. That would be getting a little picky, though. I didn't read the rest, but I'm sure it's not far off if there is any inaccuracy. They pretty much get things right.

Damn - becoming a Wikipedian is not an easy thing to do. Sure anyone can just rush in and start babbling or hacking away, but they have a decent set of rules and standards they want you to adhere to to help keep things orderly. Being a bit of a non-conformist, it's no wonder I've avoided it for so long.

Besides the other errors mentioned, the one line that really stuck out at me was this one:

"Though not officially announced, the price of the McLaren F1 road cars has generally been pegged at $1 million. Premiums of more than $100,000 over sticker price were reportedly charged, thus making the average prices of a Mclaren F1 around $1,250,000."

First, who would have been charging premiums on the price? It's always been my understanding that original F1 sales were handled direct through the factory - there was no middleman to take a cut off the top. That statement just doesn't make sense to me and I think it needs to be removed. Price variances like that may be true on the second hand market, but that's a whole different topic entirely when you've just mentioned that the MSRP was unknown.

In fact the F1's price never seemed to be a mystery to me. It was most commonly reported as £540,000 in the earliest articles during 1993 when at the time the exchange rate put that figure at $812,592. You'll recall Tiff saying that you should even get some change for your million in the Top Gear video featuring XP4. Later on it seems - and I am not certain when - the quoted price was adjusted to £634,500 which equated to $976,495 USD in mid-1994, $1,013,423 in mid-1995, $986,330 in mid-1996, and back up to $1,051,620 in mid-1997. I think it's a safer bet that this was the real price of the F1 as the other number seems only to be referenced before production began.

McLaren's realization that the cars ultimately cost more to build then they had originally figured may have played a role in the price adjustments once production got started. They weren't any accountants on the team from the start you remember. Most of the F1 team had never been involved in production car assembly before and I suspect there were a lot of surprises in regards to time and materials costs. The "Out of the Red - Into the Black" article scans that Le Man recently posted shed more light on that story.

Anyway, enough of my babbling here. Once I get comfortable with Wikipedia's process I'll try to improve on the data gathered already on the F1. It's actually not as bad as I feared it might be, which was another reason I was avoiding it up until now. In the past five years I've read some of the most bizarre and off the wall inaccuracies about the F1 on the web, and I was really expecting more of the same.
