What does it mean to stroke an engine or what is a stroker kit. Also, how much $ to make an LT1 a 355ci and what kinda power gains am I looking at?

a 355 is not a stroker motor. it is just a 350 punched out 30 over. if u just change your ci by that little and no other mods maybe you will get a 10 to 20 hp gain .If you want a stroker motor make a 383 the crank and block work will cost you a bout $600 if you go the cheap way with a cast crank.

stroking the engine means to install a crankshaft with a longer stroke (or how far the pistons move up and down).this increases the displacement of the engine.the block work basically involves having some of the block ground out so the crank wont hit it.sorry demon im not tryin to 1-up u it just seemed like he was askin for more of an explanation of how it worked

They sell a variety of strokers for LT1's on Summit. Pretty easy item to look up.

355 wouldn't be a stroker though cause the stroke would not change from a stock 350.

oh ...when does the stroke change? why is it that way for a 383?

wait a sec, i thought stroking was when you modify how far the pistons travel, correct? why is it the same in a 350 to a 355?

dont wanna jack the thread, but also why is a 383 not wise as a daily driver? and what options does one have for changing bore size...like are there set sizes that one should bore?

don't worry stone mound, that's a good question. The fact is that a 383 is like using nitrous, something can break because it's modified to perform over 100%, not efficiently. A 383 is a higher risk on the road of something inside break I guess.

Cubic inches are the product of how much air/volume is getting compressed in the combustion chamber. There are two way to increase this, bore-4.00 and stroke-3.48. You can overbore creating more width to the area getting compressed, such as what most people do, which is bore-4.030 and stock stroke of 3.48 which would equal 355 cubic inches on a 8 cylinder or you could increase the amount of volume which is being compressed by creating a larger stroke (longer arm movement of the crankshaft). Which lets say we use the typical 3.75 stroke with our overbore of 4.03 (which is typically used to clean up cylinder walls). You come out with 383 cubic inches of compressed volume,.

Alright so a 355 is bored and a 383 is bored and stroked. I got it

who says a 383 is a bad daily driver?just because its been modified doesnt make it any more likely to break than a built engine thats still a 350.if im not mistaken the small block chevy didnt start out as a 350 over 50 years ago.the engine becomes not such a great daily driver when mods like the cam cause the engine to not produce enough vaccuum to run accessories or when the compression is too high for pump gas.its got nothing to do with displacement.and am i correct in saying the 383 is a 350 with a crankshaft from a 400?please offer an answer only if ur positive about it.

Yes, the 400 used a 3.75 stroke Crankshaft. So yes, 3.75 stroke with a 4.03 bore equals 383 cubic inches.

I have a 350 4 bolt ZZ4 4 bolt main crate block punched 30 over also I have an 81 malibu I would like to have a stroker but I was told that between the crank rods & pistions it will caust me around 1,500.00 for the least caustly set is this true? Or would you have other way's to get power without stroking it. Im building this through a shop fro my dads 50th birthday I need some help doing it right.
