EGR Valve trouble

My 98 GTP had the SES light come on and I had AZ check it out. It said there was an EGR problem. Is there a way to clean that out and where exactly is it? I changed my PCV valve a few months back but for some reason I don't remember seeing the black o-ring on the old one I tok out unless it is still in the slot and stayed in there while pulling the pcv valve out. If I am missing the o-ring, can I get one at a parts store??

Both 3800 Series II NA and SC must have the black o-ring on the PCV valve. Without it you may get a P0401 DTC error code which means the EGR is failing flow test. See link below:

The EGR valve is located on the right hand side of the supercharger and throttle body. The black cylinder looking object with the electrical connector. It can be removed and the spring loaded pintle and other areas can be cleaned with carb cleaner. It may have lots of carbon. Make sure pintle moves freely. Then spray with WD40 before re-installing.

The o-ring is a common item and available at places like AZ. Good luck!

I was hoping it was just a bad PCV since I did not have the o-ring. It looks like the EGR valve is just behind the PCV Valve?? Any idea what it costs to get it cleaned?

Whenever you get an EGR fault an odb-ii scanner must be used to reset the SES light and stored DTC error codes. Then run it to see if fault goes away after a few drive cycles.

The EGR valve is located in that area. Can't miss it. You can DIY clean it yourself for just the cost of STP carb cleaner. I do not know what an auto mechanic would charge since I do my own work. Good luck!

I was going to pull the EGR off but noticed there is a gasket underneath. The EGR has never been replaced or cleaned to my knowledge ('98). I will probably need to buy a new gasket before I take it off and try and clean it???

Yes, highly recommended to have a new one ready to go. But here is what happened to me. It came off intact and I re-used it. So I have this spare EGR gasket. :dunno:

I tried reusing one and it didn't work out for me. Cheap as they are, I'd have a new one handy. Cleaning the EGR is a pretty easy job. I'd get the Berryman B12 Carb and Injector cleaner.

Wal-Mart and Advance both have it here.

I'll have to check advance on my way home. I thought they discontinued it up here, but I hope I'm wrong.
