Unable to start when hot

I have a very peculiar issue with my car - if it is hot (i.e. after driving for about 45 mins), and I turn it off, it will restart for about 2 mins afterwards, but then won't start until it cools down (about 45 mins after that)

I turn the key - and NOTHING happens. My car is '93 GOLF CL.

I've asked mechanics, and the first one had no idea. The second thought it was a connection in the starter motor, which he replaced, but didn't fix the issue.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

i am not an expert but through my experience vw's don't like to start when they are too hot -- see if its overheating or if the fan is working also check the antifreeze levels--

I realize this is a bit late but... When metal gets hot it expands a little, hence the best time to do compression checks is when the car is warm. The same rule applies to the starter. When it is hot the internal components, namely the brushes, expand preventing the starter from rotating. It is actually a fairly common problem with the early to mid 90s Golf, GTI and Rabbit.
Have someone try to start your car while you are underneath. While they have the key turned, tap on the starter to see if it unfreezes.
Starters are fairly inexpensive. Most auto parts stores sell them rebuilt between $90-135. Good luck.

if it's an automatic check to see if the starter heat-shield came loose or rusted away.
