Modern F1 CF decal types... 2005..??

I’m currently finding reference pictures of the BAR Honda F1. I’ve noticed that the front and rear suspension arms, the front and rear wings, and the chassis are a very glossy black. It doesn’t even look like CF to me, but if I look VERY close, and with the low res pictures I’m seeing, it looks to be a type of cross CF pattern, bit like tic tac toe board… It looks like the newer SMS hi def to me.
Anyone else think that using mostly SMS hi def with gloss clear over a black base is the way to go? I’m currently getting supplies ready, as my S27 BAR Honda has been posted, and should be here next week. I’m thinking 1/20 SMS hi def, as even though the affect can’t be seen all that well, as the pattern is less then twill weave or plain weave, I want it to look accurate.
I also noticed that the seat belts change from red, to black, and then even green. Must depend on how the car is configured, unless the team has some strange superstition, and the seat belts must be a certain colour for a certain race.. Wouldn’t surprise me. I’ve also noticed that the camera board at the top is sometimes beige, and then sometimes the same glossy black as the wing.
Body colour should be easy, TS Pure white. LOL.

You'll drive yourself crazy trying to find an objectively correct match for the CF pattern. CF decals are themselves an artisic representation of a pattern, not a direct duplicate. On small thin parts like suspension arms, it's really enough that there is a pattern- and as you've notice, if you paint it solid gloss black, it's really not going to look wrong either. I can never seem to find detailed enough pics of suspension arms to conclusively determine one pattern over another. Pick whatever one is easiest for you to work with! There's plenty of other opportunity on a 1/20 F1 build to add detail in a way that will really be visible.

Here is a good picture of the front wing, and part of the suspension, and brake etc… You can clearly see, very glossy, not all that much CF decoration, so I would actually get away with just painting it gloss black.
Lazy, so I’ll use Hi Def I think. And then clear with X22 acrylic clear, unless anyone else shouts out, and says No..!!!! Lovely looking F1 car though. Although I would say that, as at the moment, it’s my fav F1 team, so perhaps I’m basied.. LOL

MPWR – I’m already starting to twitch.

Yeah, I can understand that. Has HLJ let you know when it may ship?
If that front spoiler is bare CF, bare CF decals will be much too bright for it. It looks gloss black, so if you do in CF decals, I'd overspray them with Tamiya clear acrylic smoke (X19?) to darken them and give them some depth.
We'll see if Jenson can pull his thumb out and get somewhere for Silverstone. I wouldn't mind seeing a BAR on the podium- as long as the other two weren't Renaults....

if you don't use a thin slither of balsa laminate for the wooden board, i'd be severly disappointed....

Except for the fact they don't use wood anymore - it's a synthetic material.

darn it,
i was quite pleased that something as low tech as a plank of wood was used in F1.

Thanks.. Shipping ID from HLJ came this morning. Kit is on its way. The CF looks to be on those arms twill weave, but almost black.. I can use 1020 CF and use a mix of semi gloss and smoke, with a lot of thinner to make a dark wash.
As for the wood plank. I thought about getting a red 5 board..

Talking or red 5, seen the FW28..?? If this S27 BAR goes OK, I WILL be getting the FW28. And I hope BAR do well in silverstone. I really do like the team, and the car, but they are just not performing at the moment. Such a shame..

Take a look at Robrexs F1 (Williams FW24?) thread. IIRC there was a discussion there about it. HTH

The camera colour is actually required under the FIA's sporting regulations to denote which team car you are looking at. As an example, this year the 1st team car is Fluro Red, the 2nd one is to remain the colour as supplied which is normally black and if they run a 3rd car then that is a fluro yellow.
Hope this helps

Carbon fibre like this I replicate with spraying a verry dark gunmetal. If It's stil to bright, cover it with smoke and polish out. It looks like black, but if you put some "real" black next to it, You'll see the subtil difference..
