surging idle speed

Hi I'm new at this but here goes.
I have a 2001 mirage 1800 problems at low revs such as parking, waiting at traffic lights etc rev counter goes anywhere between 1000 and 0 sometimes even as high as 2000. local garage hasn't a clue and its getting a real pain in the ----. Can someone out there help.:banghead:

Most likely it's a gummed up idle air control motor and/or a dirty throttle body and butterfly.
