'88 S-10 Blazer Clicking

I own a red 1988 Red S-10 Blazer Taho 4x4 4.3L V6

Recently my car started to have a few problems I was hoping you guys could help me solve.

First the main problem is when the car is running it makes a loud rapid clicking noise. I don't think its the starter...The starter is starting to go out, but the car still starts up fine. After the car has started it just makes that loud clicking noise over and over. The car does have oil, and it isn't a knocking
noise.

I thought maybe an exhaust manihold leak causing it, but the "clicking" doesn't get more rapid or louder as I speed up.

Thanks in advance!!

-Steven

Welcome to Automotive Forums Aarkh

Please don't bump your thread for at least a day, we try our best to answer them all asap. but we can only look at our own time.

Could you tell us where the noise is coming from, and if get us a sound clip to listen to. It's the best way for us to give you the most accurate diagnosis

Yes , Welcome aboard . Since yours is an older one , most of our members have mid 90's and newer and may be reluctant to ring in on our 80's units .
Afew questions first . Does it come from the engine compartment or dash area? does it get louder with temp( warm up)? Does it increase in speed . While the car is sitting still or moving? My 89 makes all kinds of noises , mostly caused by me . Rob

The noise seems to be coming from the right hand side. Just forward of the passenger compartment (Underneath). So Engine Compartment. But on the lower back end. The noise is really hard to pin point.

I will try to get a sound clip tomorrow...The noise only really seems to change when you are idling. Idling its LOUD..like loud cracking or clicking type noises. The noises are still there when you are moving, but seem to get a little better..but not much....

I woula almost thing exhaust leak from the manifold, but can't promise it.

Thats what me and my father thought too....But He claims that the "clicking" would get more rapid and louder as the RPMS got higher and higher..this true?

Not with my Blazer, and they even seem to seal themselves up when they warm up at times

So your saying that potentially when it gets warm in my area the sound will stop?

No, mine almost goes away when the motor gets warm. The motor is low mileage, so I know that it's only the exhaust in my case

Is it FI or carb ? I have converted mine to carb and now I have a continous clicking coming from the computer in the dash behind the glove box . I think it is because of the injectors not being connected . My point is , look at the injectors and see if they are both spraying fuel . I can connect the injectors to mine and the clicking goes away . I think a solenoid or relay in the computer is doing it because of an open circuit . Just a thought . Rob

It's Fuel Injected....

The sucker has 135 thousand miles on her. It REALLY needs an Engine Overhaul...It BURNS about a quart of mile every 2 weeks...You can see all that blue smoke pour out of the exhaust pipe when I give her some gas :shakehead

oh Rambodie..If thats a pic of your blazer in your avatar...It looks awesome. I'm gonna raise my
'96 F-250 here soon for some off roadin'. Not sure how much Im gonna raise it or what tires yet..so

Thanks , Now that I have it built the way I wanted it , It is a pleasure to drive . Mine has 247 k on it , but I don't think the engine does . It only smokes after first crank .
I have rethought your clicking problem , maybe your OIL injector needs adjusting . At the rate you are burning it you might get some 2 cycle oil for weed eaters and premix with gas . Just kidding . Rob

I like Robs Blazer as well, and would like to see several more pic's of it. I know that he's spent a lot of time modifing it with some very well thought out mods.

Aarkh,
I would almost be suprised if there is very much wrong with your truck. That's a pretty low mileage rig compared to so many on this board.
I can only guess here, but if you replaced the valve seals it'll stop burning oil. Figure out your other problem and it'll probably sound really good as well.

I just set up an account on photobucket I will take some full size pics of it and my engine over the weekend and add them in on my signature. I may have to clean the carb first . Going camping in the mountains with the family . My wife has not riden in it since I did all the work on it . Rob

Well It's been burning oil for a while, and I replaced the right header hoping that would fix the problem a little...Didn't :(

I'm starting to think its a cracked or wore out piston ring...
