screw messing with the exhaust, unless youve got a exhaust problem, i say spend the money on something like the engine, it'll sound better that way

ps. im sure the ammount of money you put into an exhaust, you could put into a preformace part, ie new chip, new chip, new chip, or a new chip . . . .

This is a joke, right? A motor is basically a giant air pump. The easier it is for the motor to breath, the better. Before you put any money into a ECU Flash/chip/reprogramer, go with the breathing mods first. The reflashed and remapped ECU wont have any major effect if its still stuck with restrictive breathing.
To answer your question, I would go with an exhaust and intake of some sort. Nothing to drastic, get a little better response, open up the airways a bit, be nice like that. Now, in my years of BMW ownership, I have learned one major thing: the aftermarket is NOT cheap. Low end exhausts for our cars can cost more than a mid range exhaust for most other sports cars.
When buying an exhaust set up, don't buy JUST a muffler. Make sure you get piping as well. If you only get a muffler, the flow wont be any better, as you will still be dealing with the stock, restrictive piping. What I would recomend for your 318 is 2-2.25 inch piping, your not pushing enough air through that motor to need anything bigger than two and a quarter inch. Depending on where you go, this can cost anywhere from about $150 to as high as $500.
If you decide to go with a pre fabbed system, Rouge Engineering and B&B have good systems that aren't over priced. Just becuase they are cheaper, however, doesn't mean they are any less quality than Dinan, Active Autowerkes, UUC or the others.
If you go with a custom done system, again, don't go more than two and a quarter inches with the piping, and whatever muffler you choose is fine. From my research, real world dealing, etc., if the piping is appropriately sized, no muffler is better than the others when it comes to power. Going with Flowmaster, Borla, or Magnaflow will likely only get you a little better build quality. And don't let some shop quote you insanely high. The first place I went to wanted $500 for 2.25 and a dual in dual out Flowmaster for my E46. Next place I went wanted $175 for 2.25 and a dual in dual out Magnaflow with my choice of exhaust tips, and they would have gotten me same day service, while the other place said they would need my car for about three days.
