This is a camaros fault because??

I think we need a little explination on what YOU did and why you think the engine is blown.

well.... If you're in a race... and you get up to fourty to throw it into second for some extra boost then accidentally overthrow into FIRST :( then realize it after its redlining in 8... then... yeah... (I think it might just be a rocker arm...) it dies after start up... and knocks.... and dies w/o constant gas given.... it's screwed...

It's more likely a bent valve or a jumped timing belt...

Instantaniously exceeding the redline is more likely going to exceed the speed that the valve spring can return the value to it's it's seat so the piston might have made contact with one or more of the valves.

It's probably more of a PITA to find and fix then a write off...

[edit] Can I ask... How did you mistake 1st for 2nd? 3rd I understand... But second?!?

There is a lot of things that could have happened, but most likely it didnt cause any real damage unless you drove it home after that with it knocking and not staying running.

Side note: It takes a bit of force to get back into 1st when you are at the top of 2nd, while 3rd just goes right in.

"So I got my car 2 weeks ago and Im racing it, but dont know how to shift yet........where did I go wrong?"

Well there ya go. You should NEVER try to manually shift a ATX.

You were at 8k going 40-45? I have an auto and mine is at about 51 mph at 6500rpms. And correct me if im wrong but isnt there a rev limiter at 7300 or is that just the manuals? Whatever it is i hope you get it figured out and hopefully it wont cost too much. Good luck.

Damn someone beat me to it...

I always wondered why people try and shift in ATX (at least pre-"manumatic")... All this time the engineers spends tuning the hydraulics to try and match the proper WOT shift points and then someone tries and "outsmart" it... What a waste.

Anyway, the rev limiter is just the fuel cut off... You can force the engine to go faster if the transmission is in the wrong gear because the fuel is not longer what is controlling the engine RPM at that point (IE: it's now the enertia of the car... gasp, phsyics terminology!)

Just incase anyone still thinks they are better at shifting than their auto trans.

What you do is push it forward, you dont have to push in the button. Here is how autos are GENERALLY designed. You need to push the button, or pull back if its on the column, to get out of park. From reverse you can shift to neutal and drive without pushing the button, but you can only shift from drive to neutal without the button. This is incase you need the car out of gear quick you just slap the stick forward and it stops in neutral. Now if you put it in 1 you can shift to 2 without pushing the button in, but you cannot shift back to 1 without the button. Ditto for 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd to 4th.

All of this generally makes the car slower, even when shifting a manumatic trans it will make you slower than if you just let the computer decide when to shift.

I mean cheap as in, they are becoming easy to afford...then they are mistreated by teenagers :P

^And what the heck if your car is having all those problems maybe it is cheap^ :)

Cheep is deffinatly the word he was looking for. Your car being far from cheep, I highly doubt it. I picked up my first 3000GT in 02 for $19,000.

If you buy a 25-35 thousand dollar msrp car for 4-6 grand its cheep. When nice cars get cheep teenagers get them that have no clue what they are doing. In all fairness, I was 18 when I got mine, but when you pay just under $20,000 for a car you show it a lot more respect than when you pay 5 grand for it.

No i am not having those problems, i was just using those as an example. And hey now, im a teenager and i know what im doin (mostly). But i know what you mean, most try to rice them out or just dont care at all and just drive them like they are crazy.
