I have an manual 95 Aspire. It is stuck in REVERSE and the shifter no longer seems to be connnected to anything and freely bounces around when touched.

One mechanic suggests the connector pin from my shifter has fallen off into the transmission and that I need to replace the transmission.

IS this really the cure for a wabbly shifter and an unresponcive transmission?

Yes, the exact same thing happened to me my senior year in H.S. I had a 95 aspire that as I drove it into the parking lot had all gears (so I thought), but when went to park only had Reverse, so I had to back into a parking spot. Luckily enough I had my first hour class off campus so I was the only one around.

Well your not alone, Mine did the same thing on the way to work this morning, Bareley even have reverse, I wonder why they suggest getting another tranny, Would it be simpler to replace the pin???

Good Luck?

I would think it's in the labor costs. If you have to find a pin IN the transmission, it would be more labor intensive than just a pull and replace.

None of yall have said wether your clutch cables were checked out to see if they were actuating the tranny or not. :dunno:

It has nothing to do with the clutch realeasing, The Gear shift lever is free floating because the pin that holds it inside the trany has broke or come out.
