If your friend's 97' has a working antenna motor but the antenna is the only broken portion, then do the following:

1) turn off the radio
2) go and take a look at the antenna hole area, you'll see two small holes on the inside of the antenna ring hole. I simply took a needle nose and placed the tip in there and turned counterclockwise to remove the ring. TAKE CARE THAT THE NEEDLE NOSE DOES NOT SLIP AND ACCIDENTILY SCRATCH THE PAINT OF THE CAR!!!
3) once that is off, simply turn on the radio and the antenna mast should come right out of there. remember which direction the plastic teeth were facing on the antenna so you know which way to place the replacement in.
4) go to ebay, courtesyparts, or some dealer to get a antenna mast replacement.
5) turn off the radio and quickly shove the new replacement in the hole and the motor will simply draw the antenna in.
6) place the antenna ring back on and you're set!

If the motor goes out, there are a few extra steps involved. The motor is held on the inside of your trunk side. There are a few bolts or screws that holds it into place. Simply remove those and you will be able to easily remove it. You will need to remove the jack, a hose on the bottom of the housing(to drain water it looks like), and another cable attached to the housing. Replace that and install is reverse.
