I have a 1990 Lesabre, it has 82000 miles and just started making a loud popping noise on the drivers side everytime I go over a bump.
I am pretty sure it is the CV joint, my question is should I replace the full half shaft or just the CV joint?
Is there anything that I should worry about when doing it myself? Any good resources with instructions on how to do it?
Does anyone know what the estimated cost would be to have a mechanic do it?
TIA

If it is making a popping noise, then the CV axle wouldn't be worth repairing at this point. A new axle is around $100 or about half that at a junkyard. A mechanic shouldn't charge more than an hour's labor to replace one since all they have to do is jack up one side of the car and remove the spindle from the defective axle, tug the axle out, and install in reverse order.
