96 Jeep Cherokee Help

Just took my sons 96 Cherokee out for a test drive. At low speeds, 2nd gear, engine seems to sputter/hesitate - then clears it self at 3rd and beyond. At higher speeds runs OK. If I start slowly/accelerate slowly I dont see the sputtering. Any thoughts? Fuel Filter??

How many miles, and how long has it been since a tune up?
