Is this normal on a Wrangler

You know that sound you get in any manual transmission car when you are reversing at high speeds? Its kinda like a whiney sound that increases in pitch the faster you get.

Well I have that in all of my gears Is this normal? I have never noticed it on any vehicle I have driven before. I generally hear it quite well between 1500 - 3000 revs.

Its starting to bug me as I dont know if it should sound like that. Especially since its an 06 4cyl which I only got 3 months ago. I had already had to take it in because there was a squeaking sound coming from a ball bearing in the transmission, they had to grease up a new one and put it in there, sorry cant remember the exact name of it. I'm just ranting now anyway.

Can anyone shed some light on this?
Thanks

'04? If you're under 70K miles take it back and have the dealer fix it - for free. I've never heard a 'reverse whine' in a forward gear on a modern vehicle. Did the whine start after they put in the new unknown bearing?

Hmmmmm.... now Im getting scared... I have the same noise, I thought it was normal, it does sound like a reverse noise and at higher rpm's like you said. I have a video clip of me going through a mud hole and you can clearly hear it if you have good sound on your comp. Is this what you are talking about??? http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=721456973&n=2 Fred..... im sure this is what he is talking about, please respond, thanks

fredjacksonan - I believe I have always had this noise, my vehicle only has 1500 miles on it. Its not really noticable unless I'm topless, but it just doesnt sound right. I was afraid of looking stupid to take it to the dealership if it was a normal noise. perhaps I should test drive another one. I will try and get a video of it so you can hear it.

csparks78 - it does sound like that, yours sounded a lot louder but I'm sure you were at higher revs. How long have you had that noise?

This may have nothing to do with it but my accelaration just feels stunted. I'm not expecting 0 - 60 in 7 seconds. But I see other stock wranglers keep up with other cars when leaving the lights, mine just seems slow, but I do only have the 2.4, maybe thats why.

The 2.4 is a LOT less power, you're giving up 40HP and more than that in torque, so unless you really hammer it you'll be a little slower. But then again, Wranglers aren't usually for drag racing.
Usually. (http://www.dragtimes.com/Jeep-Wrangler-Timeslip-3978.html) :evillol:

If it made the noise since you bought it, a test drive in another vehicle would be a great idea. If they all make the noise, then it's normal. I'll still have a look/listen to the video when I get home tonight.

I was in first at about 3000 + rpm's, I bought mine used and 60000 miles and its always done it. I also have the 2.5 I4 5 spd. I rented a sport I6 in Moab during the safari and it had tuns more power!!!

But back to the subject, I was listening to it careful today and I mostly hear it when I am in 1st and 2nd at high rpm's. Fred - could it have something to do with the lower gears in the 2.5 5 spd, and thats why you dont hear it?? You do hear it alot more in 4 lo.

After having a listen to the video (looked like fun btw) it seems normal. We have an '04 with the 5 speed and theres a bit of whine when you get the rpms up in gear. As long as it doesn't get worse I'd think it's good.
