Normal Running Temperature?

My 2001 usually runs just below the mid-point which I assume is about 185 degrees. every once in awhile it creeps up a few notches above the mid point (200) - but never quite reaches the red zone. I also notice a hot - antifreeze smell. I know these motors are know for intake leaks, but I have only had to add coolant one time & never leaked a drop of anything. Does this sound normal? It has 84k and has run great up till about three months ago, seems to be getting tired.

On my 98, the gauge really isn't accurate to determine the true tempature. I know the gauge was redesigned in later years, but I don't remember when that way. You can use to monitor how things are runnign relative to the "norm", but I wouldn't put a whole lot of faith into actual numbers. The best way would be to use a scan tool to read what the computer is actually seeing.
The gauge will normally fluctuate 195 and 215 or so in normal stop and go traffic. On open roads, it should stay pretty steady at 195.
The OE thermostat opens at 195 degrees. The fans won't kick on until the coolant hits 220 degrees where the fans are turned on low speed. At 230, the fans run on high.
