Blower Motor Resistor Revisited

Well, after one major head rush, I finally got the blower motor resistor out of the darned dash. What kind of Mutant do they have at the dealership that will be able to get that in and out without wanting to puke? I'm still not sure how I am going to start that back bolt, it is a real pain.
Now, to my question, I bought the cheapest resitor that Kragen sells. It says it is for my car and the pictures on the web site -- http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?mfrcode=NIE&mfrpartnumber=DR500E&parttype=861&ptset=A -- look like the original, but the plate that goes up into the dash is about an inch longer than the one I pulled out. The plastic looks the same where it mounts and it does fit in the space provided, but the circutry looks very different.
The original has a part number of 52472768 and the new one has a part number of 52402974.
Should I worry about the differences or just plug it in and hope it works?

If it will go in all the way without hitting anything, I would go ahead and install it. The longer length may allow this resistor to be cooled better in the air path and last longer than the OEM one.

Well, a few skinned knuckles later, a bunch of swearing and a major head ache from sitting upside down for an hour trying to get the bolt by the firewall back in. Now just to hope that the cheap one from Kragen lasts.
Unfortunately, I was unable to find the right size bearing for the directional switch in the dash, so there is only a very small resistance when switching between positions on the dash. But, that is my own fault, I guess I should have been on this message board before I started this adventure and I would have never taken the control panel apart in the first place.
Thanks all that have helped either in answers to my posts or that have asked or answered questions from before I joined as I have found a great deal of knowledge on the car and the things to be on the look out for. I will definately be back daily to learn and give knowledge if I have any to give.

I'mBroken, can you describe exactly where this blower motor resistor is? I've taken out my glove box and looked around, but couldn't see it all all. Is there anything else I need to take out?

I didn't take the glove box out. It is right against the firewall, behind the actual motor itself. There is a wire connector on it that you take off then it is there with 2 bolts holding it in. If you looked at the link I gave before, the black part that is showing the wire connector end is the part that hangas down, the card with the resistor on it is the part that goes up into the dash.
You can find it by the small indent in the firewall where one of the 2 bolts go right up against the bottom of the dash.
I hope you have the right size tools though as getting those bolts out is almost worth paying someone else to do it for you.

Ahh, found it, I had to peel back the passenger side carpet and take off the bottom cover with a 9/32" socket. This is a truely an international vehicle, the bolts holding the resistor in have 6mm heads, and it figures, my 6mm socket walked off. Will need to wait until tomorrow when I can borrow one from my neighbor. Too bad I don't have a site to post a picture to link to.

Got it! Correction, the two bolts holding the resistor in is 5.5mm heads. The fan works at the lower speeds now.

Sorry, I forgot about the plastic cover. That was a while ago and my mind doesn't do well remembering stuff that happens while I am standing on my head. :)
