92 ford ranger won't start

"I have a 1992 Ford Ranger truck - standard 4 cylinder. I ran out of gas, put a gallon of gas into it, drove it to the gas station, filled up and then it wouldn't start for a seemingly different reason. There was clicking when I turned the key. A couple of guys cleaned off the semi-badly corroded battery cables and there were a couple of times that it barely turned a little bit. They tried to jump me, but that didn't work either. I figured it was the battery so I brought it to get tested and it came out bad. I bought another battery and put it in the truck and now there is no sound at all. The dash lights come on and that's it. Maybe I hooked it up wrong - there are 4 wires. I put the main ones where they go and the other two with the positive cable? Is this right? also, I had a new starter put in about 2 1/2 years ago. My check engine light has been on for several months - I got an analysis and it is apparently a clogged egr valve, but the guy said it wasn't urgent. Anything helps. Thanks."

Your starter might still be bad. You can have it checked for free at Auto Zone or just about any other auto parts store. The only thing is that you have to take it off. There is a small wire that plugs onto your starter that sometimes corrodes and causes the starter not to crank over. You might want to have that checked first. I had that happen to my Ranger and all I did was cut the bad part off and put on a new terminal end on it. The end cost about $.15 at the auto parts store. There is also a starter relay located on the fender well inside of the engine compartment that goes bad. You can jumper across that to see if your starter will crank. If it does then replace the relay. Hope this helps.

i would do what papi62596 suggested...also you may have burned your feul pump. it only takes a couple seconds of that not getting gas and it can burn-up.

I just went through the same thing with our Ranger. We thought fuel pump at first. It turns out it is the DPFE or ERG sensor. Try disconnecting it first to see it that is the problem. If it starts after it is disconnected that is your problem.
