I have a problem with the trans in a 2000 S10 4.3 4x4. The Trans acts like it is in limp mode with only 1st and 3rd gear no 2nd and 4th shift. Is there a solenoid or elect problem pcm ect?. I dont have any tech info for this vechile as of yet. It is not showing any codes as of now.

Sounds like the same problem that I had...Chevrolet is too much of a pus to recall the problem so us consumers pay for their money saving tactics...
Transmission Problems (4L60E Automatic)
first of all anyone on this site that suggests that 4L60E automatic transmission shift problems are due to the shift solenoids is WRONG! The problem with these transmissions is the clutches and require a rebuild in order to work properly again. In all the rebuild cost me $1600.00 with a 12mo/12k warranty and she shifts like the day she was delivered to me from the Chev. dealer.
*Suggestion: Have your original tranny rebuilt, DO NOT exchange transmissions, this way you have new components and it matches your vehicle just like it came off the factory floor. My mechanics are honest ASE $40 an hour dudes who priced a replacement for me and after the task it would have cost me $2300.00 ($700 difference)

The are several things that can cause problems with the 4L60e. While not very common, the shift solenoids can and do fail. It is incorrect to state that anyone that suggests them to be the problem is wrong. There are some cases that are caused by the shift solenoids.
Worn clutches is another one of the problems that is uncommon. This is usually a result of people ignoring the signs of transmission problems, and allowing them to become worse.
The most common problems associated with the 4L60E are in this thread:

This is out of the ATSG 4L60E manual. "Shift solenoid resistance should measure 20-40 ohms minumum when measured at 20 deg C (69 deg F). Shift solenoid current flow should not exceed 0.75 amps. The shift solenoid should energize at a voltage of 7.5 volts or more (measured across the terminals). The shift solenoid should de-energize when voltage is one volt or less." You can get one of these ATSG manuals on E-bay pretty cheap. About $20. A bargain for the DIYer. It's only a fraction of what you'll pay a transmission specialist.

Lot of Possibilities.
Do not get rebuild happie untill you check it out.:grinyes:
Even engine running problems or computer wiring problems can put it in fail safe.
The transmission is computer controled.
If it is in fail safe there is a code stored.
You need to find a good repair shop with a transmission/engine capable scanner and see what is going on.
But first thing check fluid level and condition.
What is the mileage and service history on it?

Just went through this with my 2001 Crewcab, 4.3 4L60. Cost me $1500.00 for a complete rebuild. Make sure they use the upgraded sun shell. The following article I found explains 2 issues.
The 4L60 has 2 main problems: One is in the valve body, the other is a stamped metal part referred to as the "sun shell" that carries torque in 4th, 2nd, and reverse.
In 1993, the 4L60 transmission was introduced as the 4L60E (E=electronic controlled) with a new aluminum valve body. Previous versions of the transmissions used cast iron valve bodys that were absolutely bullet-proof. I don't know all the reasons for the change, but have to think it was to save weight. In any event, the Torque Converter Clutch Valve (TCC) had a tendency in the 96-98 transmissions to wear the bore it slides back and forth in. The round hole would become slightly oblong, allowing trans fluid to leak past the valve resulting in loss of pressure to the Torque Converter lock-up circuit. What happens next is that the PCM, sensing slippage commands maximum line pressure, which results in the hard shift many here complain of.
Interestingly, the hard shift is actually a good thing. It helps prevent the clutches from slipping as they engage by applying the extra fluid pressure so that they engage quicker with less slip. However, if not corrected, the slippage will lead to burning up the torque converter.
The fix is to resleeve the TCC bore and install a new TCC valve. Sonnax makes a kit and sells a special reamer to do this. The kit costs $40-65, and the reamer around $75. The whole job can be done in a few hours. Sonnax has a web site, and are good about providing information on their kits. There are also some good technical papers available at the site as well.
The other problem happened to my pick-up truck at around 68K miles, and to my Van at 72k miles. What happens is you lose 2nd, 4th and Reverse gears, probably experience a big "Clunk" sound. The problem is a basket shaped sheet metal stamping that carries load in 4th, 2nd, and Reverse. There's a splined flange that is spin welded onto the bottom of the basket that transfers torque from the sun shell into the output shaft. After 60000 miles or so, the flange fatigues and the spin-weld fails.
The sun shell has been a marginal part of the 4L60E, as well as it's predecessor models, the 4L60 and the 700R transmissions for a long time. It just became a chronic problem when the company started mating the 4L60E to the higher output Vortec engines beginning in 1996.

Had a similar problem with our '99 s10 ZR2 4x4...lost 1st and 4th and truck limped around. One transmission shop was insisting on the $1200 rebuild claiming it was most likely the front forward clutch. Consulted the forum experts and they kept me coming back to an electrical problem. Finally found an honest transmission mechanic who found shift solenoids A & B were bad. $180 later we were on the road and the truck was behaving great...this was over a year ago and no problems since then. Good luck and keep the forum posted on your progress!

My favorite is when someone does their own filter/gasket and unplugs one of the solenoids on accident when they drop the pan.
