rebuilding head

well David's geting to me trying to get further up on me so i've got some money saved up so here goes tell me if im missing anything because im giveing it to the guy tommrow.

3 angle vaulve job- or 5 whitch should i do the guy says i should do 5
new vaulves
port and polish
shaved head
new vauvle guide seals
new rockers
new retainers
cams- but what should i go with
cam gears

also geting tb ported to 55 mm and getsing my header and intake manni bored to match the head. please give me any more sugestions.

oh and the port and polish and vaulve job and shaved head is only costing me $250 :-D damn its good to know people

Are you planing on boosting in the future? If so shaving isnt a good idea unless you replace the head in the future. 5 angle is the way to go. Comp cams are good just get the ones that match your goals

i know but its proably gana be a while before i can turbo it so im not gana shave it much. and when i finaly do turbo it ill just put a thick head gasket on it.

Yeah, I'm evil :evillol: . I'm sending off my TB tomorrow morning to get ported and powdercoated. Then sending off the head in a week or 2. Should be sweet!

Travis, read this article on choosing the right cams. It's very important to choose the right ones, otherwise you won't get the gains out of them that you're looking for.

well i got everything out today the vaulves and all and i went ahead and tore the block apart. theres just one question about the block. on the bottom pully can u just use any pully puller to get it or do uhave to have the special chyrysler puller. but anyways im giveing the guy the head tommrow for the port and polish and 5 angle vaulve job. wish me luck lol

Remember, you should always use new lifters with new cams. I personaly plan on using a 50trim or simular wich will be fine on a fresh/stock 1g head with comp2 cams. Reamber that your head will reqire an RA-20 finish for any metal MLS gasket or RA-30 finish for Cometic or HKS gasket. Unless your refinishing your deck keep into consideration its very diffucult to get metal gaskets to seal on old unfinished decks without alot of prepwork. I'm going over to a friends garage tonight for the same reasion. He had an RA-20 finish done on his head, tryed to refinish his deck but couldn't get it smooth enought to use a metal gasket. So were taking off his MLS gasket and putting a stock gasket on.

Hes just rebuilding the 420a so there isn't much of a need for those special gaskets.

As for the pulley Travis, I just use whatever the hell puller that we have laying around at the time, it doesn't have to be the special one from the factory.

I think it would be pointless to replace the rockers and lifters on it. I had a thread on this a while ago. The lifters dont even touch the cams so why does it matter if they are new or not? Also the rockers are rollers rockers (I think they are on the 420a anyway) so they dont hardly wear at all.

If you are putting on aftermarket cams, you definately want to change the rockers and the springs.

The springs on your head and 1g heads are going to be set to the stock cam lope.

IE: The spring compresses and decompresses as the cam turns, when you put bigger cams in there you need a spring that will equally match the the cams. Or the spring will be compressed all the way before the cam is fully turned.

Just telling you what I learned from my shop which builds dsm race cars.

I know that they will function fine without replacing those items. But If you do replace them it will perform better.

i am puting EVERYTHING new. from top to bottom is gana be new mabey more money but oh well. my motor my money :lol: i want it to be perfect

I think it's a good idea to at least replace the rockers if you're upgrading everything, but it also depends on how many miles are on the motor and how well it's been taken care of. If they look good and aren't worn down on the rollers, I would just keep the same ones, but that's just me.
