my car wont turn over any more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its an 84 with a 350 brand new.......... i was driving it for about two hours the other day and parked it fine in front of my house........cam e back out two hours later and now it wont evn turn over im getting power to the big terminal on my starter but there is no power goin to the other wire on the smaller terminal to the right..............i tried it with the ignition on also!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but i did notice when i looked at the starter the first time the smaller terminal wire was really loose almost to the point were it could be pulled off...... i thought i found the problem so i tightend it thinking the problem was fixed................but it wasnt................
so basically i was wondering if maybe i burnt up my starter while i was driving and thats why it wont turn over????????????
but i really dont know what do you guys think???????????????

What does it sound like? Is it a click when you turn your key? Or is it the usual cranking noise.?

ummmmmmmmmm its not making any kind of noise....................

OKay when your turn your key to start it up does it make a click noise? or does it crank but not roll over?

it doesnt make any kind of noise............all that happens is that the gauges jump and my radio turns off...........

Did you check your fuses?
Camaro84
05-30-2006, 11:58 PM
Thast what i was thinking that maybe it could be one of my fuses because my rear hatch wont open from the inside compartment but i checked all the fuses that i can see if are broken and they all looked fine.............. i dont know about the big metal fuses.............

You're talking about the purple wire on the 's' terminal right? That's the ignition switch feed that sends 12v to the solenoid when the key is turned to start/run. If you've verified you do not have the 12v on it with the key turned then you need to trace back to the switch for a broken wire/bad switch or no power to the switch.

There should be a fuse just for the hatch, but the switch may be bad.

well the purple wire is not purple anymore does any one have any picture of a starter i could look at........ but i no its the wire thats by itself and the other wires that are on the bigger terminal have power so yeah were does that wire go ...... it looks like it goes into the fire wall how am i gonna trace that????????????????..................

It goes to the ignition switch as stated. The actuating rod may not be pushing the switch all the way to the start position or the swithc is not getting power or is bad.

The car was apart for a new engine? The starter may have gotten dropped or something else may have happened to it. Can you jump it with a screwdriver between the big lug and the S terminal on the solenoid? That would rule out the starter. Also look at the fusible link that comes off the solenoid up the firewall. It will feel like silly putty if the link is blown.

so i should follow the wire from my solenoid to the ignition swith and make sure there is nothing wrong between the two and check the fusible link......
and somone told me i should check my neutral safty switch.......... but i dont no were to find it..............
and how exactly do i jump the starter......... and what will that determine?????????????????????????

It will determine that the starter still works...just make a connection between the two spokes on the starter while the key is in the on position.

alrite guys i did it and it was successful but i dont no what to do now...............
i took off my middle console to take a look at my shifter and look for the neutral safty switch and i didnt even no what i was looking at..... but i seen the wiring harness and put the test light on it and it has power........so yeah im not sure were to go from here??????????????/

O yeah and i tried to follow that purple wire from my solenoid looking for that fusible link and there was no sign of one maybe i missed it but i could nt follow it for to long because i lost it when it reached the drivers corner of the engine compartment and then i lost it..................

Best advice I can give you is to get a Hayne's or Chilton's manual and look up the replacement of the neutral safety switch. They will tell you the location and usually have pictures of what it looks like.
You can also trace the wire back with an ohmeter and a buddy helping you. Have him hold one terminal of the ohmeter on the solenoid wire and use the other end to try and figure out which wire in the harness is the other end. If none of them get any ohms go back to looking for the fusible link. If you have ohms on one of the wires, but not on the same wire on the other side of the switch when the shifter is in park/neutral then your switch is bad.

well i got a manuel and now i no were my neutral safety switch is and im about to go look at that and see if that is the problem.........
in the mean time i have just been jumping the starter with the purple wire were it enter my neutral safty switch and and to my positive on my battery............. so that pretty much means that its my neutral safety switch right??????????????????
and i looked for a fusible link and there is not one no were......... im thinking that the last person to rewire the wireing didnt put a fusible link back in were there was suppose to be one......... thats probably also the reason why the wire changes from purple to a red.............

No, the purple wire does not have a fuseable link on it.
And if jumping power to the s terminal on the solenoid starts it, then it must not be getting power from the purrple wire from the ignition switch.

Yeah thats wat i was thinking it was from either the neutral safety switch or the ignition switch...................
so i went out and bout a neutral safety switch and now everything is working perfect...................thanks everybody for all the help it was much appreciated...................
