YZF R1 - P/E chainset question..

Anyone ever built one of these chainsets before –

You basically build it link by link, but is the brass rod pre cut? I’m not sure how you’d cut the rod into such little pins… I quite fancy a challenge, but not to the expense of cutting my finger tips off.

I’m thinking about getting this for my R1, the rest of the P/E I’ve seen doesn’t look worth the money, but the P/E chain looked interesting. That would add to the model, the rest, such as pre drilled P/E brakes, and mesh etc I can make with the plastic parts… I can soon drill the holes in the brakes myself…

Sry I cant say I have build one of these kits mate, But it would be interesting to see the finished product if you decide to buy.

Looking at the photo, I'd say the rod is not pre-cut.

However, I guess it will be very thin brass rod and probably cut easiliy and cleanly with your xacto knife.

I'd suggest attaching some masking tape to a piece of glass so that the rod won't bend when you cut it and the tape should stop the short lengths flying across the room ;). BTW this is all just guess work on my part!

Here is a little how to for much more complicated (because of hard material in pins) 1/9 cosmos chain set.
This one from AS is way easier like Steve said, brass is preaty easy to cut.

Thanks... I'm up for a bit of a challange.. So you say i can cut the rod with my hobby knife? It can't be very hard brass then.... Almost as soft was electrical copper wire...

Wondering, build a link, glue it up, and then cut the rod, or cut the rod first, and then glue... I'll put an order in.... Worse that'll happen is that I glue the rod to my fingers..:p

Basically you won't even need glue since it will be tight fit, you can cut it with those small scissors from ladies nail bags :D

I'd avoid glue if possible, I think. Wouldn't it lose all flexibility woth glue and be hard to fit around the sprockets(?) ?

Ah right… So, glue not needed, I just need to sit there and slowly put it together loose… This should be fun. Watch out for the WIP, or watch the news for “rampaging English man, pulling hair out, shouting – I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE” on Sky news in a few weeks time…
