12v lights on a 6v system

I just bought a 1953 Dodge Truck and was wondering I go about using lights that are 12volts on a 6 volt system. Also what harm would it do to use a 12volt batt instead of a 6volt batt?

If you install a 12 volt battery, you'll also have to upgrade to an alternator, plus upgrade all 6 volt components. 12 volt lighting on a 6 volt system will be dim.

My other question is, I have to replace the head lights and tail lights because they are missing. Will normal 12volt lighting work w/ it? I also have a set of fogs for it, will those work

As noted above, 12 volt lights will be unacceptably dim in a 6 volt system.

6 volt headlights and tail light bulbs are still widely available.

If you convert to 12 volt, you will get better starter and lighting performance and you can use modern electronics (igniton, stereos, etc). However, it can get a bit expensive.

Maintaining the original 6 volt system will keep your truck more original and may enhance its value.
It is possible to use an 8 volt battery and tweak the mechanical style voltage regulator to supprt 8 volts for improved starting performance.
