SL To VR4/ twin turbo conversion...

I'm kindof curious... (mainly because i need to start saving) how much (average) am I looking at for adding twin turbos? That is, assuming I have it done at a shop I'm not going to tackle that project myself... a little too overwhelming.. :)

from what i understand, its cheaper to just buy a vr4. if you had a shop do all of the custom work, i'd say its probably cheaper to buy 2 or 3 lol. many have asked but from what i understand few have done it.
main reasons being (and this is just second hand knowledge), you need a vr4 donor, it takes a long, long time and even more money, and thats if you do it yourself.
And if someone comes on here and flames you for asking this (because many many have) dont feel bad. I think everyone who ever wanted a 3000gt or stealth probly asked the same question at one time or another :)

Yeah, it takes alot of donor parts from a vr4. I guess you could have a shop do it, if you really wanted to, but I've yet to hear of somebody go that route...it would definantly cost you.

Im having a shop do it, but its a very good shop that specializes in the 3S platform. But yes as you said, you will pay for it. Depending what you all want, and how cheap you can get stuff. I paid around 1200 for all the parts from the donor car. Plus about 4000 in extras/goodies. Like a LSD, clutch, 60k stuff + oil pump, Gauges, full exhaust + precat elims. DN performance intercooler hard pipes, Turbo Timer, SAFCII, Datalogger+cables, the list can go on and on....and on and on.
As you can imagine, labor can be very expensive, and it varys shop to shop. Mine is definatly not cheap. But its well worth it to have this particular shop do it.
I think I will be hovering around 8k all said and done...

^and that's just the TT conversion, I think that if you're talking about doing the whole AWD swap there's a link the FAQ.

i was quoted 6500 for the tt conversion from 3sxperformance

Buyin a VR4 is cheaper as has been said. But if you like doing this sort of thing thing then I would say by all means go for it assuming you are at least somewhat mechanically enclined.
Oh and just a quick question for anyone on the side. Wouldnt a TT SL pull on a VR4 from a roll due to weight and less drivetrain loss?

yeap, from a roll FWD>AWD although, does a VR4 have taller gearing??? cuz if that's the case, the VR4 would eventually take the lead (after a while of course). I don't think the VR4's gearing is a whole lot different than the n/a 5spd though...

:( looks like I'm adding 4 electric turbos....
*edit* What kind of piping and/or modifications am I going to need for that?
also... I need the two headplates (headlight plates) in black... Id like to know if anyone knows where can I get that...
I also need to find a carbon fiber hood with a scoop (or two)

Okay, just to reiterate what Igovert500 has already said, electric turbo's aren't even worth the shipping you pay for them. As for a carbon fiber hood, there's plenty of options out there, but I would suggest visiting http://www.deftracing.com/ first.

dont do electric turbos, and yes a fwd TT will beat a modified VR4 on the highway, the gearing is not much different if at all? maybe on the 6 speed. But im doing it because i love my car and its what i want, a quick, great looking car. Im not doing it to compete in the quarter. :)

Please please pleaes don't waste your money on electric turbos. If you honestly have money to waste like that, just donate it to the Red Cross, that way it at least goes towards something worthwhile.
Spending money on electric turbos is like paying the paperboy to ride behind your car on his bike and give it a swift kick every once in awhile. So as I've said before, PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. I can't stress this enough, they are the biggest pieces of crap ever made.

ok... i can accept that... the only reason I didn't listen the first time is a friend of mine had some pretty decent results from an electric supercharger... (he drives a jetta however which may be a huge difference.) I'm just trying to find options... thanx for the link for the hood however... good stuff...

^how much money do you have?? either save it, or we can give you some mods that'll make the car feel nice. One of the best n/a power mods is headers which I think run for around 700 bucks???

Gearing is insanely different. 5th gear going 70mph in an NA you are around 3000rpm. It sucks horribly. With my 6000 rpm redline in my SOHC I would bounce the rev limiter around 150. A DOHC would bounce it around 165 (If I am remembering correctly). A TT wouldnt bounce limiter until around 202, that is of course if it had the power to go that fast.

You ever hear of placebo effect?? Yeah thats what he felt. There was no difference.

The only difference he felt was weight reduction...ie, his lighter wallet.

You said something about headers... 700 bucks
what can I do to start out with with around 300? (my current ammount of money)
I just need a few more options...

I would personally never buy headers for an NA. Its just not worth it. And you still wont be happy with the power. I paid 850 for all the turbo components i needed, including the stock turbos, which i then sold for 250. So if you wait on the headers you could get all the parts you need. It all depends on the power you want to make.

Why dont you go take a look at www.dynamicracing.com I think it might be your best bet, they have staged upgrades for our platform and not to be mean but with someone with your limited knowledge planned stages might be best. Click 3000GT/Stealth under category on the left --> Staged upgrades --> NA Upgrades.....

Thank you VERY much for the staged upgrades page... that is actually very helpful... good lookin' out man...
I am glad I found this forum... your all very helpful and have assisted me in more ways than i can count...
I hope my posts aren't too irritating and ignorant I'm just starting and you guys provide great assistance with that... thank you

While I love Dynamic Racing, and those mods are good places to start. I'd go a cheaper route. If you shop around you can find those parts cheaper.
For instance, while Borla is a great brand for catbacks, why not just go custom for half the price. Here is what you wanna do:
Go to www.importperformanceonline.com Find the large K&N cone filter and adapter. That should be about $80, and now you have an intake.
Then go on ebay, find some mufflers that you like. If you do some searching, you should be able to find 1 or 2 (depending on the look you want) for around $50. Take it/them to your local muffler shop and ask them to build you a custom 2.5" mandrel bent catback. If you look around, you should be able to find one that will do it for around $300. If not a shop specifically, at least an employee looking to make some $ on the side.
That is where I'd start. One intake or exhaust isn't going to give you much of a difference in results. No need to spend 3x the money on it, just for name brand stuff.

I've got a "Power Adder" Cold Air on there right now... if that's somewhat close...

Cold air does next to nothing for our cars. Have you blocked off the resonator?

Actually, we're going to be taking off the resonator and replacing it with a flowmaster. then we're going to straight pipe both of the Y ends...

Shit. yeah. Thats what I get for trying to post as I run out the door to work.
Blink VR4s dont have them. THey go on the NAs Intake arm to quiet the incoming air. With it eliminated the intake growls more.

do you get about the same sound/power from a custom catback as from the aftermarket ones?
Stealthee
06-01-2006, 12:57 AM
Different set ups net different sounds. As for power there isnt much power gained at all from a catback. Even going with a Borla TT catback wont net much power.
