I am nearly 50 years old and have owned the same 76 Trans Am for 30 years. Its a 4-speed 400 ci 6.6 litre. It has 32,000 original miles. I put 200 miles on it a year, if that. Im pushing 520 + hp at the rear wheels and ran 11.25 in the 1/4 on a muggy day. Honestly it's to much car for an old F like me. Once summer hits I break her out and let it rip for 30 mins or so, but when I'm going 45 mph on a 40 mph road on Sunday afternoon just minding my business I always find some young punk in some weed-eater sounding ricer riding my a$$. Now the instant reaction is to speed up but at my old age I just let them pass.
It should not have to be about respecting me because thats just to much to ask from our youth these days, I know because I have 2 of my own. It should be about respecting the car and what it stands for. When the car infront of you is older than you and worth more than it should I think it should just be common knowlege to give it some space and distance.
Now last year it was around eight in the night, dusk and I was siting at a red light with it in neutral as some late 90's Camaro pulled up next to me with a kid no older than 20. He started reving the crap out of his little 5.8 litre or whatever and looked over. It was a long day going to the bank and getting the oil changed and I decided not to let this one get away, so I raised the RPM to 2 grand and just took off when it turned green. It was dumb, stupied but fun and I think I proved a point, that old guys can still have a cool car,a lead foot and a light left foot on the clutch. The race was over after about 3 sec after I hit 60 and had to shift to 2nd
Now I want to hear what you kids think about this?

I appologize on behalf of young kids that do this :uhoh: There are just some kids that never learn that no matter how fast your car is, there will always be someone faster. Having a car for that long with that kind of mileage is very impressive and I can definitely show respect and appreciate a car like that. I think that's the beauty of cars, though. It can make anyone feel like a kid. When I'm in my death bed, I know I'll still have gasoline pumpin' through my veins :icon16: Kids just need to realise that racing on the street is a very dumb thing to do. When you realise this, maturity comes very rapidly. Everyone in the local motor club have stopped racing on the streets and waited for the track. I have definitely done this too, because with the shitty mileage I get with my car, I'll need to save that gas for the track.
A buddy of mine was driving down the street and some CRX was tailgating him pretty bad. My buddy pulled over, went up to the guy and the guy was just laughing thinking it was funny. My friend then proceeded to punch him in the face and we were on our way. He couldn't stop telling me how much tension that got rid of haha.
If someone annoys the crap out of you, ignore it. I know it gets frustrating after 70 people do this to you in one hour, trust me, I know. They expect me to race, even though I'm in the middle of driving my sister to her piano lessons. Let them do what they want though, in a couple of years, whatever trend they're following will die out and what they'll have left is a piece of shit that they used to call their car. They'll be stuck with it because everyone will think it's embarassing to be in it and they can't sell it. Just laugh at them. You stuck with your car for so long and dumb kids shouldn't ruin the experience for you. It's not worth being mad about. Just keep enjoying your car and be happy that your car can still make you feel like a kid

That was very well put. I agree with everything you said. There is no need to let some dumb punk kid get under your skin. Kids can be so stupid sometime but what can you do can't kill-em...lol. Like L-Spec said just enjoy your car, wow only 32k on it that is amazing very impressive. Just try to keep your anger to a min don't need your b/p to rise and end up having a CVA (Stroke). Do you have any pics of your car? I bet she is a beauty.

Thanks for hearing me out. Just wanted to let out some tension. Normaly it does'nt bother me, I just laugh but it was one of those days where I wanted to prove something. What I am about to say is important, you both already understand this but others can hear it over and over and just ignore it.
v As much as kids and some adults dont want to admit it, speed is addictive and once you "think" you have complete control thats when your nerve and reaction slows. Trust me, please trust me I have experience and more "wheel time" than most of you all, I'm 50 for christ sake. There is a time and place for everything. The track is for racing but if you really need to let it fly go to a back road where no one else is, a secluded road w/ no traffic. The way I always like to put it: If I am going to crash its not going to involve some mom and her kids coming back from church, it will just be me.
v Now I am old but in my day 100 mph was moving, that was the shut off point for most of the teens in the 60 and 70's. Acceleration is where its at, becasue 0-60 is where all RWHP counts. For me and most street races, cause I know, races wont last for more than street light to street light. Top speed is so boring. I am not telling anyone to go out and race or telling them how to do it, but if you get over 80 or 100!! you have a death wish. At least at 60 you have a chance of walking away. 0 - 60 is all that counts on the street. 100 + is for the strip. Thats just how it is folks. I have been driving the same car for 30 years, it and I both stood the test of time by those rules I just listed. But hell I'm old what do I know.....right?

Get more of a reaction about what? Being old? No one cares. Age is a state of mind. There are some young people out there that act like old stuck in the muds. lol.
Edit:never mind you mean people responding. Give it time its still early. What time is it on the east coast now 8 or so its 4 on the west coast...

Hey, yeah i agree that speeding is stupid, at least big speeding. I used to speed alot lol, then i got a ticket, and my insurance went up 15%. but top speed is boring, it's much better to feel the g-forces pulling your body apart. I'd love to drive a 5+g formula one, those are insane.
and 50 isn't that old, my dad's 54. it's too bad he doesn't drive an awsome car like that, he's got a mazda b3000 and a honda st1100 bike.
great advice though, and i've always thought that exact thing, i don't want to kill anyone. i'd hate to live and kill someone or cause someone to be horribly disfigured or disabled. then you have to live with that the rest of your life.
edit: I know I'll still have gasoline pumpin' through my veins
Not if it's all gone lol.

I hear you on the "no respect" front... but it's not b/c I'm old, it's b/c I'm a girl.
My dad is a motor-junkie... I don't think I've ever seen him smile as much as the day I beat a Mustang 5.0 in my lil bitty Infiniti G20. (okay, it was raining and the mustang broke its wheels loose, but still... I won).
And, I agree that high speed is for the track... it's a controlled environment with the necessary people available should something not-so-good happen.
Unfortunately, I know kids can't respect themselves let alone someone else (I'm a high school teacher, so I see it every day) so this trend of "I'm better than you" isn't going anywhere any time soon.

You know, on behalf of "younger folk" (I turn 32 in a couple days...THAT may be considered old in some circles) I believe you are a little off the mark. I understand the venting...even at my age, I find myself say "those damn teenagers!" more and more often...but the fact is...at some point in all of our lives, we were young AND STUPID. I know I was...luckily I quickly grew out of it. People (should) grow out of it quick once the responsibilities of life start to head their way (i.e. job/bills/mortgage/wife/kids/etc.) I ignore youthful stupidity...I know someday, the reality of life will hit at some point...I'll get my laughs in then.
At any rate...have a good one, and if your a vet...thank you for your service.

we're all born dumb. You just have to do what you do and not care how other people react. The kids you're talking shit about might be making the same post in 30 years. As long as YOU know what you're doing and why you're doing it, who cares about anything else??? People will understand when they are in the same situation. And then hopefully they will learn that you never know why people are doing what they are doing, and you can't always judge somebody by their actions. Maybe that kid doesn't always try to race people. We all give in every once in a while. Maybe somebody saw you race that kid and thought.. WHY DO ALL THESE IDIOTS ALWAYS HAVE TO STREET RACE?? There is always a flip flop on the situation.
you NEVER know.

what i said was that not everyone has the same opinion. and you have to respect that fact. just because you think it's perfect, and a select group of others tell you/think it's prefect is purely opinion. not to say that you lot are the only ones that think that, it's just that there are people out there that don't.
if you want nasty comments i can accomodate that request. my previous comment was not nasty. it was meant to allow you to see that you can't speak for everyone.
