Whenever i try to drive a little rough, the damn temperature almost hits the red line. I checked to see for low coolant and also, i had just replaced my thermostat. On the memorial day, i was going to go for a 5 hour long drive. But now i dont know if i should take my fbird. Any hints on wats makeing the temperature go up with the presence of full coolant and properly inflated tires. Thankyou for any help.

The only thing i can think of is that your fans are not kicking on, have you cheacked under the hood when it is running? to see if they are turning on when yor engine is getting hot?

As stated above make sure that fan is kicking on. Yikes that could get nasty if it isnt.

cooling fan relay?
You sure you did the thermostat right? Is this same problem why you replaced the thermostat, and it had no effect?

after that it sounds like water pump isnt pulling its weight... (if rad fan is on)

okay I'm somewhat having this problem. Mine gets real hot with the fans kicking on, so i turn off the vehicle, then after i turn the vehicle back on about 5-10 minutes later the temperature fluctuates and runs smoothly.. hoses, coolant, everythings been replaced before and is in good, the thermostat was just recently replaced. Would this mean my water pump is bad? some mechanics told me the water pump is working since its fluctuating tmep but im not sure what could cause it? any help?

in addition, im getting the piston slap noise when i start the car, and yes, it goes away once the car is warmed. But when i drive it rough, the temp goes near the redline. Fans i checked today, have been working. What are the symptoms of a bad waterpump? As listed above by superducky55, maybe its the waterpump. Oh yea, the thermostat seems to be okay, i guess..
Thanks for the help.

Keep it simple for a second, go to the parts store for 2 things:

1 - a hydrometer, can be found for $2, check the integrity of your coolant.

2 - a radiator cap, should always be replaced with the stat. A bad cap allows the system to not pressurize which means it has a lower boiling point.

no the engine has not been modified and i had bought a rad cap a month ago. I was wondering what a hydrometer does. Thnx

i think the hydrometer is to check if your coolant is the right mixture. youre not running 100% coolant right? cuz coolant gets rid of heat slower than water..but helps in anti-rust/anti-freeze/anti-boil etc. does the overheating go away when youre at high speeds&low rpms? or it stays up once it gets there? if it stays up, its prolly your water pump. im guessing it'll stay up if your fan works fine.
