AC question

Why would a parts store refuse warranty on a new or rebuilt AC compressor if you don't buy a accumulator/dryer too?

don't really know but i'll check with the ac guy around the corner next tuesday. just had the pontiac checked for leaks and recharged there.

i put a recyled compressor in the 92 bravada. came with a warranty and worked out fine except that i converted to R-134. the R-134 seems to leak out faster. my ac guy says thats common, he's been recharging cars less than 3 years old. he also said there should be something new coming out soon to replace it. in the mean time i bought a recharge kit to keep it topped off after getting his bill.

I like the link Blazee...very good reading and info. I guess after the system's been down several times on the '92, the dryer likely isn't very effective anymore and the '97 is probably getting that way too.

yes, a very good post blazee. gave me enough info that i actualy sounded like i knew what i was talking about when i went by the a/c shop. hey chris, how much does a new accumulator/drier run you? sounds like you might need one

i talked to my ac guy today and he said the drying is not an issue here because we live in the desert (potato chips don't go limp or break down here, you can leave them out for weeks) and the accumulator has plenty of room to store quite a few years of non-condensable debris that is usualy heavy enough to settle out and be trapped in the bottom of the accumulator.

he suggested the potato chip test. put out a bowl of chips and see if they to go soggy and limp, that simulates the dessicants in the drier. down in the humid south you probaly will need to change the drier if it's been exhausted to atmoshere as the freon will be displaced by the humid air, which when combined with normal infiltration over the years will cause a break down of the dessicants.

i know, kinda funny advice to use potato chips for the test coming from Idaho. but you'all down south can just use the cracker test instead.

actually shocked me the first time i saw potato chips go limp from humidity. but that was in baton rouge. the only place i've been where you sweat even while taking a shower.
