Ignore CRJ's love life. :p I'd suggest first off to look and make sure this car doesn't have any defects or problems that'll come back later to haunt you.
I'm sure you already know to do that. Now, performance wise it greatly depends on how much money you really are willing to spend, like Kustm said.

My suggestion would be to start working with name brand parts for the small things, like a high quality spark plug, air filters, fuel injectors, etc.

Also, these small things will play into many future performance mods. For example, my car is an '02 and the supercharger kit for it is mainly designed for the '03 - '05 versions. But, it does fit on '02 Cav's and Sunfire's equipped with Delphi Fuel Injectors. See my point? Hope this is helpful.

You can go with a different air filter with the intake, injectors are pretty much worthless on a stock car and expensive and the spark plugs stick with stock unless you got more mods

drive down hill while excellerating. . .jk

i highly recommend you dont do anything to that car. The 2.2L engine is a piece of performance crap. Ive seen time after time, people dump tons of money into bolt on mods for there 2.2L engines just to see them get slower. That engine has been named one of the top 10 worst engines of all times by more than 1 magazine.

Its prone to leaky head gaskets and lack luster performance. The only thing that will make that engine faster is a turbo/supercharger/Nitrous. And thats about it really. Unless your a guiness with engines, dont waste your money.

Instead take the money you were going to spend on mods and put into a savings account. After a year or two take that money and put a nice downpayment on a faster car with an engine that was designed to go fast.

so says u...i have talked to people that tell me the 2200 OHV is alot stronger than alot of ppl give it credit for...if its "prone" to leaky head gaskets, replace it...if its not a good engine to start with, rebuild it (performance cams, piston arms, pistons). An engine is only as good as you make it

I've seen the other side of the 2200 and it's not bad. Dodge neon if I remember righ had the #1 worst motor. And it is a VERY highly modded motor. Hell they even stick them in 1st and 2nd gen dsm's.

I'm gonna have to agree with Jayson, I had a 2.2 and I wasted around $2k-$3k, and it DID get slower, I ended up hating it and just looking at it pissed me off because it FINALLY clicked how much money I wasted.

i agree w/ both jayson, and ur last post. cav's were meant to be grocery getters.....thats it. the more i drive my 03 around the more i realize how big a piece of shit it really is.....and its practically new and the best version of cavs w/ exception to the z24. i have had it in the shop 4 times for brake problems and 2 times for other various problems such as loose struts and leaky back windows...... save ur money and stop wasting time putting money into a car that is shitty from the factory and even worse as time rolls on.

ive had the 2200 for about 2 years now, i can say its very dependable, never had any problems, but not worth a shit when it comes to upgrading, thats just the engine, as for the cavalier itself, its a total pile of shit, just my opinion

and on the flip side i have had 2 cavaliers...each for a year...1 had over 130,000 miles on it and i haver had a problem with it not 1 time....ever....ever....never

the cavalier i have now i have had for about a year and a half and the only problem i have had is the clutch (normally at 70,000 - 80,000 you need to replace it anyway) and i love my cavalier

well maybe its not a complete pile of shit, ill admit i was in a piss poor mood when i typed that, what i was thinking though every time i drive down a side street, or almost any street for that matter, my car just sounds like a giant pile of loose plastic, it sounds like the body is just ready to fall off, i thoght maybe it was just mine until i rode in 2 different cavaliers of the same style, they made the same sound....
