Ignition Questions

When the key is in ON position, what are all the parts in the Iroc-Z that turn on?
How long does the fuel pump stay on for?

I'll explain...the fuel pump turned on, and then turned off when I turned the key to ON, and It does it every so often or it doesn't turn on at all, kinda like my engine starting, WHAT A COINCIDENCE. Now, this could be a bad fuel pump, or it could be an ignition issue. Either way, I'm getting to the bottom of it.

Oh yeah, the headlights, I think it just needs a new high beams button (no joke)

WIth the key in the on or "run" position and the engine not running everything will operate...except that the fuel pump will run for just 2 seconds (to prime the fuel system). If the pump doesn't always prime when the key is switched on, I would first suspect the fuel pump relay of being bad.

There is no "button" for the highbeams. The switch is actually mounted on the column, down low on the upper side of the ignition switch. To access it you have to drop the column and it is on the left side. The switch is actuated by a rod that runs up to the turnsignal stalk.

Where is the fuel pump relay--(never mind, i've got the wiring diagram)

What the-- then what is that switch directly below the headlight button? I thought that was for the high beams.

I still can't find the fuel pump relay. The only things I see familiar in the wiring diagram is the dist cap and the ignition coil, but that doesn't help me at all.

the fuel pump relay should be on the passenger side in your engine bay.. it should be about the size of a handgun ammo clip and a bit rounded..

fuel pump relay fuse is on the passenger side fenderwall, the fuel pump relay itself is on the driver side firewall right next to the cooling fan relay.

Is that cooling fan relay and the fuel pump relay those three relays in a row near the driver fender? I'm going to take a guess that the FPR is the third from the right looking under the hood, and the fuse is by the battery on fender?

I still can't find this thing based on the wiring diagram, there's 3 relays on the driver's side of the firewall. 2 of them are showing BROWN wires and the one in the middle only has 4 wires...

ok, this here is the fuel pump fuse located on the passenger side fender wall.

and here is the fuel pump relay on the driver side firewall.

keep in mind tho, mine is a 91, there shouldn't be any difference, but it's possible.

Relay 2
Orange, Orange, Black, Dk Green

Relay 3

Damnit, It's not the same wiring trust me, your cars didn't come with a Burn Off Relay or an MAF sensor did they? If so it's not in the same place. The diagrams from 1989- to 1990+ are different.

The fuse is intact, just checked it but I still can't determine which relay is which out fo the three. It's in generally the same place but the relays are in different places from your picture Geno.

I turned the car's power on again and I waited for about a minute before the fuel pump turned on. I couldn't get it to turn on for a few more starts.

*EDIT I FOUND IT, I thought i'd found it when I took the third one from the right out and the fuel pump still worked, again with the second, but the first one, the relay between the firewall and the fender in the corner, which I hold in my hand right now is the reason the fuel pump wouldn't start. *hears applause in head*

might be a stupid thought, but look at the relay and find the 12+ out wire (the line that gets switched ON) jump 12v+ into it and see if our pumps kickes on. if it does, you know that is the fuel pump relay. if something else kicks on you know it ISNT the FPR. :)

Someone mentioned if I send voltage to one of the other relays, I could short a fuse, blow the fan, etc. So I checked carefully.

The switch below the headlight knob is for the driving lights (some people call them fog lights but fog lights are amber and driving lights are clear)
To turn on the highbeams, pull back on the turnsignal stalk and it will click..highbeams on, pull again and it will click...highbeams off.
