Timing emergency

I did the timing belt. Tried to fire it up. No start. I can hear a bit of a slapping and it sounds very high pitched compared to normal startup sounds. We absoloutely could not figure out a way to find TDC on the crankshaft sprocket so we marked where it was when we took the old tbelt off. I guess something happened.

I've draw a pic to try to show you what our problem is:

The marks for the camshaft sprockets are clear and the oil pump but the crankshaft and other little pulley up to the left have no clear places to line it up.

If you think the valves would be shot with the cranking that we tried to do, let me know. We hand cranked it six full revolutions of the crankshaft and there was no interference.

There is a mark on the crankshaft. Its on the plate in front of the balance shaft belt. Also a mark on the timing cover. Here is a pic of mine. If you cannot see it very well just copy to your computer and zoom in.

Is there any way to get the belt off without popping off the auto tensioner? I'd rather not have to deal with setting that again but I'll so what I have to. That picture is uber helpful. Thanks so much for the help.

you can get the belt off, but you will need to pull the tensioner and put it in a vise to compress again, or the tool that looks like a long wrong that goes through the engine mount bracket, you can compress it that way also buy it pushing on the bearing.

Well. I think we've got the timing belt on but the damage might have already been done. We are getting 0 compression across all the cylinders. Is there anything else that I could have done wrong or is it time to kiss the DSM goodbye?

Did you crank it over by hand or by the key when you 1st got it put back together? Also to tell top dead center of #1 piston, You can do this by being real careful with A screw driver, just put a long screw driver in the spark plug hole and crank the engine over by hand on the crank pully. Once you find out that the piston is at the top look at where your timing marks are on the timing sprockets.

If you just turned it over by hand with no signs of heitation i cant see you bending valves. But if you cranked it over without turning over by hand 1st you could have bent them all.

Are you sure you have the right lines on the sprockets lined up? It could be possible you were 180 out o n 1 or both cames depending on what lines you used on the cam sprockets.

And its not time to kiss the dsm goodbye if you bent valves!!! Its a easy fix to take the head off. You will have to just take the head off and make sure the pistons are still good. No holes probably dents, no big deal then. At that time you just need new valves or get another head.

Oh by the way i have a complete 2g head ;) Thats in great shape if you find out you need one ;)

We did crank it by hand first. It would get a little tight at times but it made it 6 full revolutions. I have no idea what could be wrong. I'm so frusterated and I need a reliable car to drive back to Boston on Tuesday. I'm off to the dealership.... Thanks for the offer for the head.
