1975 F-250 Differential

We just bought a 1975 F-250 Camper Special with a 460 under the hood. It is in great condition and we got a hell of a deal on it. So far we have changed oil/filter, plugs, coolant, airfilter, PCV valve, and topped off the brakes, tranny, and power steering. Once we had everything tuned up, we promptly broke in the 460 with a burnout. One thing we noticed, is that both tired locked up and spun. Did Ford have some sort of Posi-trac or locking differentials in these trucks? I don't think the previous owner put a locker in, but I couldn't believe a truck this old had one. I know my 1977 Heavy Half didn't have one. Thanks. Next project is plug wires. Pics below.

Bump. Even if you don't have any info on the differential, can I get some feedback on what you think of the truck?

I think it was common for the camper specials to have a posi rear-end. It is thought to be a bit better for towing so maybe the original owner ordered it that way.

Ford did offer several posi trac differentials back in those days, in the 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks. Those were called traction-lok i think, and that truck should have a Dana i believe. It was an option, but im not sure if it was standard with the camper special package or not. If you service the rearend, and change the oil, be sure to put the special additive in it. If you were lucky enuff to get the owners manual with it, itll have info on all that. As for feedback on the truck, judging from the pictures id say u got a honey there. It looks like it was well taken care of. Dont expect great fuel mileage though, although itll probably get better mileage than its newer fuel injected cousins. Ive had several that would get 14-15 on the highway, but start gassing on it, or pulling heavy loads, and u can watch the gas gauge fall. Keep it tuned good, and youll have to tune it more often than the newer vehicles. If it still has factory exhaust, a good set of headers , and a good exhaust system will help the 460 alot. Good luck.

The guy we bought it from gave us the owner's manual the other day. I haven't looked at it yet, but I will do some studying later. We have yet to get it tuned well, but we bought a carb kit for it and will get that together in the next few days. I've been thinking of headers and exhaust, but no details yet.

If it has the autolite, or motorcraft carb, be sure not to lose the little metal tag under one of the screws. It has id numbers on it to tell the exact model of the carb. There may have been several different carbs for that application that had slight differences. Most of the kits will have parts for several different apps. , but its nice to have the tag to be sure u have the right kit. Same with the differential, if u take the cover off, dont lose the tag, if its still there, it has alot of info on it. I dont know if this is your first big block or not, but trust me, when u get this one tuned right, its a bear and youll have fun with it. Good luck.
