Transmission problems

I have a 97 Thunderbird, and have been experiencing some problems. The problem is that when driving, the car seems to “slip” out of gear. Push the gas and the RPM’s go up, but there is no acceleration. This does not happen at any specific speed, or in a specific gear.
This first started occurring about 2 years ago. At that time, I had it checked, and was told that nothing was wrong with the transmission. However, I was also told that my battery was going bad. So, I changed the battery, and it stopped doing it for over a year. Recently this has started occurring again. I have had the transmission fluid and filter changed hoping that may help the issue. It has done it again since that.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what is happening?
Thanks.

Thats difficult to figure out, did you see any metal in the pan when you serviced it? If you did I would say just rebuild the tranny and check out your valve body out for anything funny.

I havent noticed any metal fragements in the pan. I have been driving it with the O/D off for the last couple of days. While driving with the O/D off, I havent had a problem......yet.

I had to baby my 94 4.6 for over a year with the tranny slipping out of gear and shuddering before going into high gear,Changed the fuild and tried Lucus Trnny cond.It helped alittle. After all that I just had it rebuilt.I paid $1,040.10 and from I`v heard that was a good price for it.Good luck with yours.

If it doesnt do it when you have the O/D off then I would tend to think that its the overdrive band. These cars tend to LOVE to shift into overdrive at a VERY low speed. How many miles are on the car? Those are the only symptoms?

I have been driving it for a while with the OD off, and it was not doing it under that condition. However, within the last week, it did do the same thing with the OD off.
It is very intermittent, and I can not "produce" the problem. It seems to have been running pretty good over the last few days. It seems to jump out of gear between 20-40 MPH.

There is a small chance it may be something with the computer causing this but I really doubt that. If I were you I would take it a really good reputible tranmission shop (not the big chains) and see what they think. I have one guy that I go to that is very trustworthy and I always take my cars to him when I have tranny problems. Find someone like that.

Thanks, I will see if I can find someone to take a look at it.

Hi, sir blast, If the fluid change did't help and you have the problem now also with the o/d off, You should consider two things, The TSS(trans speed sensor) and most likley the TR (transmission range sensor), They both can give you a problem and not trigger a code, Which you did not mention, GOOD LUCK, Clay.

i had a later model ford a few years ago that had a tendency to slip out of gear every now and then. it would only happen for a few seconds before the transmission would engage again. i was told by a mechanic i knew at the time fords were prone to that. he fixed my problem by getting under the car and using brake cleaning spray to clean "something". i wish i knew exactly what it is that he cleaned under there, but ever since that cleaning, i never had that problem again. again, my ford was a bit older than yours so the service i got may not pertain to your particular vehicle. good luck

WELL IS IT A MANUAL OR AN AUTOMATIC...IF IT SLIPS OUT OF GEAR IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU GOT A BAD CLUTCH/PRESSURE PLATE. iF THERE WERE ANY SHAVINGS OF MEATAL THOSE MAGNETS SHOULD PICK THEM UP. JUST TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE I WOULD PUT NEW MAGNETS IN IT. BECAUSE AFTER A WHILE HEAT WILL DESTROY THE ACTUALL MAGNET.
