Where do I get an oil pump?

I have a 2000 with the 2.2L.While I was on my way home from work last night the oil lamp came on , so I stopped and dropped a qt in and the light went out. This morning I drove the kids to school and it popped on and stayed on....another quart. The light went off for maybe 6 blocks and then was back on and started driving sluggishly , so I parked it.I can only assume that its the oil pump , so I called the local parts stores and noone has an oil pump...what gives?Lastly , how hard is it to change the oil pump out once I get one?

Sounds like the sump is just low on oil; doubt that it's the pump. Is your oil level up to the full mark? If not, add enough oil to reach the full mark - AFTER you've let the truck sit for 15-20 minutes after driven to get an accurate reading.

After you fill up the level, check underneith the truck for any leaks, i.e. oil filter, drain pan bolt, etc.

I've never heard of an oil pump failure on any 2.2L or 3.2L engine.

I am unsure...I have put 4 quarts of oil in it in the last 36 hours and still have the light on.How about this...how do I test the oil pressure? It's not leaking anywhere that I can see....I'm sure I would be able to tell if it was losing oil that fast just by the driveway spots.....but there are none.could it possibly be a blocked filter ?

How much oil does the oil dipstick read? is it full?

Your oil pump screen could be plugged with junk. Sea Foam will help to break up the junk.

How often do you change your oil?

I just bought it.The light did indeed go out......at first.I drove it two blocks to get an oil change/filter/whatnot....I'll update.

The shop declined service due to low pressure/flashing oil gauge.bah!

They don't want to be responsible. Can you do the oil change yourself?

Have to agree with Amigo - 2K, sounds like your oil pickup screen is clogged.

You need to do a couple very short oil/filter changes for a while; I'm not keen on using engine flush cleaners, but it sounds like you need to do something in a real big hurry.

Engine making any funny, loud sounds?

It was probably sluggish because your oil is probably way over filled. Over filling can be a bad thing. If its high enough for the crankshaft to hit the oil it will get sluggish, but the bad part is it can make your oil foam. Then you start pumping foam instead of liquid oil. Never just add oil, check the dip stick before and after adding every quart.

It could be as simple as a bad oil pressure sending unit. It should be mounted by the filter, try replacing it first and see what happens.

Yes its overfilled , my oversight. However , when the light first started going on I could hear the lifters tapping louder so I dont think its the sending unit. What I'm going to do is a full oil change first , sensor , then the sea foam , after which I can only imagine that its the oil pump....sound about right?

Why tear into the engine to replace the oil pump when you haven't
ruled out the oil pressure switch? Just because the lifters were ticking doesn't mean your oil pump isn't pumping. If you let oil level get too low, your lifters may tick.

I would change the oil and connect a mechannical gauge to the oil sensing line and see what actual oil pressure is (I'm assuming that the 2.2L doeasn't have the idiot gauge on the instrument cluster). This will at least tell you whether or not you have a bad oil pump before you buy and replace it.

As Ramblin' pointed out, you just don't hear about oil pumps going bad. In the end though, it's up to you to do what you think needs to be done but it would be a shame to spend the time and $$$ to replace an oil pump only to find that you have the same symptoms once you get the engine back together.:2cents:

No , you must've misunderstood...lol , I meant that that was the order in which I was going to troubleshoot....replacing the oil pump being as last resort.

no harm done , I am in the process of changing the oil now....the damn filter is on tight as (enter what have ya).

EDIT: All done....truck is quiet as hell , no light so far , drove around 20-25 miles around town/hwy with no problem.Thank you all for talking me down and having me do the simple stuff first.I'm just that kind of guy I guess that hopes for the best and prepares for the worst. Now , if I could just get that golfball outta my catalytic converter...hmmm...next post. Thanks again all.
