Will I have to replace the entire car engine?

My car started to make these funny sounds the day before yesterday... A mechanic told me that it was the crank bearings and that I should replace the whole engine? Is that logical? or could I just replace the crank bearing. Pls inform me of what is the most logical and economical thing to do. Thanks 1983 chevy caprice v8 305

if you hurt a main bearing or rod bearing, you would have to erbuild the engine, youd most liekyl; have filiings throughout th motor and the crank is most liekly hurt to, take it to another mechanic before you do anything though

A spun rod bearing will result in a bad connecting rod or two and also a bad crank journal. A spun main bearing will result in damage to the block which will require an align bore and special spacer bearings. Either way, you'll need a crank. There's also a good chance that with a spun rod, the piston crown will be crushed onto the rings due to cylinder head interference (from grossly increased rod bearing clearance).

That's all good, but an '83 305 had 14cc dished pistons and a tapered/relieved area around the upper ring land. There will be plenty of other damage to warrant replacement, however.

Such an engine (actually, an '81 LG4) is what I based my post from, via experience. :) The #1 and #2 pistons slammed into their respective heads and had a nice chamber-shaped imprint on the "flat" area of the piston.

But, I digress.

As for the pulley, it was likely the harmonic balancer - the rubber "seal" tends to extrude over time, allowing the outer ring to spin freely of the balancer hub. Makes a hell of a racket, glad to see that's your only problem. They're fairly easy to replace.

LG4 and a couple others yes- but not all 305 did

such as the L69 and so forth
