stuck oil filter

We have an 88 caprice, and the oil filter is stuck on. We have tried everything, even the last resort screw driver to get it off, and no luck. All that is left is the top where it screws onto the motor. Any ideas how to get it off. We have tried to use hammer and chisel to try to get it loose that way, and so far it will not move.

Most motors you can use a large allen wrench to remove the threaded part, which will remove the top of the filter along with it.

when in doubt, use brute force. Bet an air hammer would make short work of it.

continue with a hammer and chisel. Try some different anglesw with the chisel and be careful not to scratch the gasket surface on the block. EVERY stuck filter I have ever encountered eventually comes off with a hammer and chisel. It just takes time, patience and careful attention.

large allen wrench will not, and did not work .

I continued with a hammer and chisel which after about an hour got it loose.

not sure if it is the same for all cars and trucks but the allen wrench idea worked for me - you have to get most of the outer shell of the oil filter out of the way - on my chevy truck it took a 3/8 allen wrench (same as what would have been used on the old style brake calipers) - it takes some force to get it started or loosened but you just keep twisting and there is a ring on the threaded part that will push againts the base of the filter as you are turning the allen wrench

Reason #1 why you shouldn't use anything but your own hand and your own power to tighten an oil filter.
