Hey everyone,
I got my 05' Tiburon GT off a show room floor with 55 miles on it. I think the worst thing I have ever done to my car is pull it forward too far on those concreate stoppers. So let me get to the point, I just worked a 16 hour shift and was going home today and went to get on the highway and my gaige went to 6 before it shifted and then i heard a click and my check engine light came on. I pulled over had dad come check it, he said it looks fine, take it to the dealer, what exactly could it be? He's a mechanic but didn't want to really touch it sense it could void my warranty, he just looked at basic fluids and said everything was good to go so he had no idea and couldn't really look anyways. The Hyundai dealer in town went ahead and told me to continue driving it as long as the 'check engine' light didn't start flashing, in that case I'm suppose to have it towed it. This car just dinged 17k miles, and has had the fluids changed 100 miles before they are actually do. So I don't really like this, I mean it seems to be driving fine, I'm scared to actually attempt to push the gas down cause I don't wanna ruin anything... I'm just disappointed that this new car already had the check engine light come on, that's why I purchased the new car--- to avoid problems. But in the end it's pretty much covered I hope, I just thought their customer service sucked - telling me to leave the vehicle, NO loner cars available-- how conveinent...
Please don't pick my spelling apart, lol. :) I hate that... Thanks alot all, David. Just looking for some feed back on what it might be...

Could be anything from a loose gas cap to an emissions problem to any number of things. The check engine light always throws a code into your system, so you would need to see what the code is and what it means. I don't know where you're located, but places like Autozone will pull the code for free. Your dealer will be able to pull it also so they can pinpoint the problem.
It seems strange that they wouldn't help you out with transportation. I've had my car in for 1 warranty service, and they gave me a rental car to drive until it was done.
Hope you get it worked out.

As the guy above has said: It could be anything. But, the most common things are your Mass Airflow Sensor, and your Gas Cap. for your MAS, just take a peek at the filter, or maybe wipe off the probe with a clean cloth (the probe is mounted to the top of the lil...circular chamber thing. There's a wire coming from it)... Easiest test for the filter is holding it up to light: If it comes through, its clean, if the light's obstructed, it's dirty. At this point, you can blow the filter out with compressed air, buy a new filter ($20 - $60 depending what you're getting), or you can take the cheap/temporary way out and just turn the filter 90 degrees so the air flows through the unobstructed portion of the filter.
hope that helps

i wouldn't even start looking for what's causing it... i'd drop it at the dealer and demand a replacement. if you've just got it and your getting problems, imagine the long road... not worth it

Heya guys,
thanks for responding. It's been 2 weeks and the check engine light has been on and off a total of 5 times, Hyundai won't give me a loaner vehicle so as long as the check engine light isn't 'flashing' apparently I'm ok according to the Hyundai Dodge City Manager in Columbia Missouri. Keep in mind tho that I work 40+ hours a week, and am in college full time, who has time to drop your new vehicle off 50 times a month? Went to start my car last night and (keep in mind its got 19k miles, got it brand new off a show room floor, check engine lights been on 5 times, have all my paper work of proper care, etc.) anyways went to start it, it surged and died, and what I mean by 'surged' is the power went out and it died. When it eventually did start, the clock was reset, for some reason my thermostat says Celcius instead of Faren. and my radio stations were all reset, and it drove weird all night long- no check engine light however. This is bullshit, I mean my Toyota Camry I traded in was a better car than this thing, and it had 200k miles and was totalled once before and even after I totalled it (someone tboned me) the check engine light was never on... how weird, I owned the Camry from 120-200k miles and NOT FUCKING ONCE have I seen that check engine light come on. Hyundai keeps dicking me around, and they can take this car and shove it up their ass. I love this car, but the trouble aint worth it, imagine whats going to happen when my warrenty goes. What do you guys think I should do? :banghead:

Try another dealer. Even if the check engine light isn't on, there should be history codes stored in the computer that can help them get started on diagnosing the problem.

Are you sure? Hyundai in Columbia has told me 3 times in the past, and once today when I called and explained the problems to their manager and he said unless the check engine light is on then they cannot plug it up to their computer and diagnose the problem. I also explained the surging and how I work 40+ hours and school full time mon-fri and can't drop my car off for a 'few days so they can attempt to get it to come back on'. I'm calling their main office Monday and going to talk to someone and get this worked out... just wish they could give me a loner car until then, figured that's why I got my extra fuggin warranty, and yet I have to drop it off, uh. Well thanks for the reply... :)

I've got the same problem goin on, the electrical has been givin me problems for quite a while, the sunroof doesn't open smoothly and takes a while, its been taking longer and longer to start and when its left on ac, it drains the battery in seconds, seems like the battery just isn't holding a charge, but it could be loose wiring or too small of guage wiring, ill keep you posted if i get mine fixed.

Hey,
My car now has been in the shop a total of 9 times in the last 7 months. 4 of those times, the SAME check engine light code popped up and EACH time they replaced a DIFFERENT part on my car, still the check engine light comes on from anywhere to 24-72 hours and then shuts off. I can't discuss much info on it, but I am discussing legal actions on my car for free. Google.com-> Lemon Laws, I live in Missouri and was able to fax all my car reports in and got consulted for free, and then they took my case on for free as long as I abide by certain rules. So I'll let you know how that goes when I'm done with that. But my car battery has been replaced twice, and it still cranks over slow. The sunroof NEVER has opened or closed smoothly. So many times have my custom presets on the radio been preset by a short-out when starting the car. They have replaced about 5 different sensors, and a few other things. But my point is, keep track; and know your rights a customer when it comes to fraud. I mean you know somethings fishy when your car check engine light comes on EVERY 30 days or less, and has electrical problems and the owner of the shop says he doesn't know what's wrong with my car and has to consult a few other people. (I've heard that twice now! HA!) Anyways I'll let you know how everything goes...

You should be keeping records of what code the CEL's are throwing. It seems that Tibby ECU's are very touchy. For example a few weeks ago I was out in a torrential downpour. I hit some deep water here & there, nothing that bad, but on the way home I threw a CEL. Scanned it and it was P0058 H02S (Heater Control Circuit High Bank 2 Sensor 2). I went to the connector sprayed it with contact cleaner and cleared the code. It hasn't come back. Only thing I can sum up is that it got wet.
