problem removing door handles

k i tried removing my door handles to get the correct size for the sheet metal. but there is this stupid piece of metal right behind the door key hole i removed the screws and everything else but the problem is that. can any one help me out i got a 97 civic 4 door. i know a 4 door yuck but hey when you get it as a gift you cant say no
