Tranny Problems?

1996 Jeep GC Limited, 4.0 L, 4X4 (All time), automatic, 62,000 Miles. The tranny started Slipping today? Basically what it is doing is when I am driving it shifts hard through the gear ranges. Can feel/hear a clunk as it shifts. Before it shifts it feels like it's straining to get up to speed, like there is no power. Also when slowing down there is same clunk sound/feeling. No codes at all with the key test, don't know if there would be. No prior indications of a problem. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to AF cbtalon.

Has the transmission oil ever been changed? For a 96, it should be if it hasn't even if it only has 60k miles.

While you're at it, have the bands adjusted and adjust the throttle cable too.

What you describe also sounds like the computer might be relearning the shift. It would do that if the battery has been changed or disconnected for some reason.

The clunk could be some other slack in the drive train as well - either the transfer case or the diff's.
