please help me!!

Ok, I need the help of the honda gods.
I am trying to replace the timing belt on a 1.5l out of an 88 civic dx.
I am having problems with the crank pulley bolt.
I'm turning it counter-clockwise staring at the drivers side of the block.
I've already broken a 1/2 inch drive ratchet and the damn thing isn't budging!
Am I turning it the wrong way or am I missing something?
Also, I've heard that after I get the timing cover off I can leave it off after I put the engine back together.
Is that true?

Your turning it the right way, it's just on there tight. I always use a impact gun to break mine loose. As far as the cover on the timing belt i left mine off. I don't know how bad or good it is but i know a lot of people that just leave them off so they can ajust their cam gears and i haven't heard of any problems. I hope you didn't pull the valve cover off to get the cover off. I just use a screw driver and pry it out. ONE last major thing line up the mark on the crank with the mark on the cover so everything goes smoother. While your in there you should change your water pump. Go to sears and get like an 18" breaker bar, and try to use a longer steel pipe at home as a cheater pipe..that should help.
