Timing Belts

Anyone have problems with keeping timing belts in these cars? My Talon belt broke and trashed the engine. My Laser goes through them like changing oil filters.

How exactly does the belt mess up?

I have 161, 000 miles and it fine. But I work at a shop and to replace things cost alot.

If you are going through them like that, either A) you need to take your car to a shop because you obviously have no idea whats going on or B) you need to take it to a different shop. If you push them, they will break but I would expect about 50k miles before you would even have to START thinking about it, 60k is the time to change it and after than, you're pushing it. However, I have heard of cars with 110, 125, and 130 thousand miles with the original timing belts.

:eek7: Wait, wait, wait. You come in here trying to sell your car to us and you tell us the timing belt has almost 3X the recommended amount of miles? I hope it breaks on you before you can sell it. Selling something like that without advertising an obvious potential problem like that is underhanded as hell. :twak:

Were you talking about my car? The car that would make your car look like a 4 year old on a big wheel at the track? You can talk all the shit you want to about but I'm not the ignorant fuck with a $500+ head rebuild waiting to happen. And you "work at a shop" huh?

I ended up trading the Talon for the Laser. I now sold the laser, but was wondering if anyone else had the problem. Thanks all for the response. Sounds like i had a shop that wasn't doing something right.

JRainey, it sounds like you had a shop that had no idea what they were doing. If you ever need to get that stuff done again, I'd go to a different shop.

Sunny'sRedTalon, you have 15 posts and you're trying to argue with someone who has over 2,000, think about where you're going with this, not to mention the rest of the board will tell you to change it. I'm not going to tell you to change the belt because it's your car, but I would STRONGLY advise it. Religious timing belt changes are the most important part of servicing your car. And in your case, I wouldn't even start the damn thing until it's changed. Last time I heard of a car that had that many miles on an original timing belt you want to know what happened? The timing belt broke as they were moving it 30 feet from the garage to the shop to get a new timing belt put on. It bent ALL the valves and I'm pretty sure it damaged some a piston or two.

I thank you for the advice but i got this car about 2 years ago and the guy that sold me the car just changed the clutch and timing belt. But what i said was true and that since i have had the car i havent changed the timing belt.

Cool Pics.

Crazy thing is it was a factory dealer. The owner took pretty gppd care of me getting out og the car. He gave me the exact price I paid fro it when I bought it 8 years earlier. I can't complain. I had great imes in that car and a fun time driving it.

Bought a 2005 Caddie XLR so no complaints

it might not be the timing belt, have checked the tensioner??? i had to get the tensioner replaced on my talon because the timing was off 5/16 and the engine was brand new.
