Celica Vs Sr5?

Hey, well Im looking for a beater and I have rwd fever. But because of all the drifting hype you cant find a pos 240sx for less than 1800. A couple of my friends drive ae86's and I think theyre a blast to drive. But they are a little hard to come by, even for the sr5 so I was wondering about the rwd celicas/supras. First of all, what was the last year the celica was offered in rwd? Were there any huge flaws with the car? How do you think it would be in terms of handling in comparison to a stock sr5? I dont know if I should just wait it out for the hachi or be different and sport a celi. Thanks-

85 was the last year of the rwd celicas. So far the only problem that ever seem to be prone to are the side mirrors going bad if they are powered. Also they tend to rust if not take care of. The lift backs weigh a bit more and the hatch seems to rust, so I went with a cuope instead, lighter is better anyways =P. Their isn't much aftermarket support for these celicas so they aren't very expensive. The biggest thing you should consider though, is if you want IRS or a solid rear end. If you go for the IRS you can swap in a MKII supra IRS and obtain a larger diff and a better IRS. If you stick to solid you can swap a MKI supra rear end on, but those are rare, or you can swap some of the truck rear ends as well. A lot of the rolla parts work for the rear suspension aswell. the rolla has way more aftermarket support, but with the right finds and swaps you can make the Celica pretty good aswell. Some people have stripped their celicas down to 209Xlbs, and if you had a coupe could get it even lighter. But be warned, if you want to do up a celica you will have to buy other parts to make your celica drift ready. Like 82~92 rear camaro shocks work for 3rd gen celicas. Or modified MKI MR2 rear struts. Or slightly modified 240 front strut bar. The list goes on and on. As far as the motor goes, it's mainly LCEngineering and some others, basically the motor only has support because of the off roaders who have the motor. Since it is a truck motor. I rather not deal with a 190K truck motor, which is why I'm getting an engine swap. but if you want you can either pull a Turbo 22RTE from a truck or turbo the 22R/E that comes with the 3rd gen celicas.
However if you get a 1st gen celica I actually think there is more aftermarket support, but still the motors that come with them aren't that great (were used in the US to pass emission laws) japan got the 4A, 3T motors. You can make them pretty mean and that is up to you really. But there is a reason why they aren't that expensive and it's really because there isn't a tuner demand for it.

so far seems like most 3rd gen people go to Celica-GTS.com there are a few guys on there that know 3rd gen celicas in and out.

hey its me, my firend form vallejo has a lcengineering powered 3rd gen (i think 82) putting down probably around 250 wheel, he drifts it al day, well use to...
acutally im having quite the time getting the mr2 to drift around, i have all the new parts in but still runs like shit, need to adjust the tps and stuff... but i would go for the ae86 gt-s, then the 3rd gen cleica, then a sr-5 corolla
your bryans friend that lives in town arent you? if so i can hook you up w a 82 corolla, but its the carb version...onoly like 80,000 miles

yea some people got some powerful 22R motors, there is a guy with a 22RTE and he's putting out 180~ hp and 240~250TQ, lol.
Man I wish I knew about that deal a long time ago when I was an AE86 fan boy, now I'm stuck to the celica =P. Trying to drift the MR2? Sounds a bit tough even when it's running properly, I've never gotten the chance to drift an MR car but from my understanding you're suppose to go into drifts a bit earlier than you would in a FR car. The Drift Bible video has a bit on drifting MR cars.

Yeah Im sure the mr2 is pretty sticky in the twisties.
I dont care about power for this car, my friends sr5 is a blast to drive and it probably only has 70 to the wheels. I like the gt-s of course but Id be spending way too much on one.
Yeah I live in Napa, Im interested in the 82, how much is it?
