Why I hate my silencer...

Ever since I bought my exhaust I've been trying to get my silencer out. I tried when it was off the car, on the car, hot, warm, cold, everything... it won't budge. Someone posted a silencer-remover. It was a hanger bent into shape and then taped. It supposedly worked for him, but not for me. I broke a lot of hangers trying that. I don't want to spend the money for a silencer remover. Such a waste of money.

I've never heard it without the silencer, and I figure I got to be losing power with it in. It should be deeper, and alittle faster :-D. Any other ideas on how to remove them Sum o bitches? Thanks.

slide hammer? Thats what I would try. You did take the screw out right?

Yeah... I did take it out. I figured you people knew I was smart enough to do that... :-D J/K.

Hammers are too big to fit in the hole. I need something small that can slide in and then like open up and pull out hard (that's what she said ;-) ).

Yeah dude, are you sure you got all the bolts/screws? It should just slide in and out.

Im not sure how your silencer looks, but you should be able to weld something to it and rip it out. If it doesn't matter if it gets messed up you should be able to come up with something to rip that thing out.

Have you tried using a hook like you'd use to hang something on your ceiling. It would be stronger than the hangers.

Connected to what though? Everything is weak. I'm strong, so everything breaks easily.

Oh, and would it be better doing it while its warm or cold? Car on or off?

If you have a torch or something you could try and heat the exhaust but keep the silencer cool and maybe that will break it loose.

Weird. Coul you get us a close up picture? I say stick a tow hook on it, hook it up to a 4 wheeler or truck and give er a pull ;).

I used a hanger, but you have to bend it over several times on itself in order for it to work and be strong enough. Believe me it took me all the strength I had in my body to pull my silencer out. You might need to use more than one hanger to do it. just make sure you tape them together good enugh, other than that i would go to autozone and just see if you can find anything that would work.

Well, other than sound, I really don't think you are missing out on any power. If you are it won't be noticiable, but tips are for weiners. get a cloeser pic.

Or poeple who live in MA :D A friend in his T67 powered GVR4 got pulled over in a parkinglot this week. They just see the exhaust and pull you over, since the law says anything that is not stock is illegal, or at least they interpret it that way. I run mine just to try to stay out of trouble. For what it's worth though, I see 42 lbs/min with it in or out, so I can't see it hurts power either. I also ran mid 12s at 109 in full street trim, while the car runs low 12s at 113 on race gas. So again, the tip silencer doesn't seem to hurt much, since that's the usual difference I see. Actually a little better, race to pump is usually 5 mph for me. I'm working on another solution though, one that doesn't require me to ass around with the thing everytime I go to and from the track. It should even keep the cops happy...

If the hanger is too weak, go to home depot or lowes and pick up some steel bar stock that you can bend in a vice. Mine can be tough to put in and take out, they key is to go in absolutely straight/square. If it cocks one degree to one side it binds up. Frustrating, but doable. Make two tools, and keep them 180 degrees from each other and pull evenly.

Yeah Im going to try somethig like that today. I can pull it out to the end of the muffler (bc it sits 1/2" back). But it wont come out any farther. Going to try some things today.

Yeah, the silencers don't hurt performance. I think it was Super Street and Nad's project RSX. They put a catback on it and dyno'd the car with and without the silencer. I think they only lost like....less than 1 horsepower.

just fyi the nt's usually sound pretty bad with a full exhaust. I've heard some and I thought it was a riced out honda. The silencer doesn't really hurt power either, so you might just want to leave it on.

I got mine OUT!!! Here's what I did:

I took a little flat head and a hammer and dented in the sides of the silencer where it touched the muffler. I tried spraying with liquid wrench and brake cleaner, and nothing. I took some lubricator and sprayed all around. This stuff it thick and gelly like. I wiggled the silencer around until the gel worked its way in. The silencer could wiggle back and forth, so i kept doing that with a big wooden doole (sp?). Worked at it for 2 minutes, and it finally slide out then.

It sounds great actually. It's very deep, and it doesnt "scream" like it did with the silencer in place. I hear civics all the time with straight exhausts and this sounds deeper, maybe bc I have more mods than most civcs around here (and I run rich :-D ). I'll try to get a sound clip up tomorrow or so. I just have to stop by belt and brakes from squeeking and I'll be all set. I'm going to try out without the silencer tonight to see if I like it or not and maybe Ill keep it off. We'll see.

Thanks for all your help!

My car has a very deep and smooth tone, it doesn't sound like no damn honda. Congratulations on getting the silencer out, my exhaust sounds like shit with it in to.
